In reining competition, contestants are requiredto run one of several approved patterns. Each patternincludes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying leadchanges, rollbacks over the hocks, a series of 360 degreespins done in place, and the exciting sliding stops that arethe hallmark of the reining horse.The National Reining Horse AssociationFounded in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association(NRHA) is an organization dedicated to the promotion ofthe reining horse. It serves as the standard setting bodyfor the sport of Reining worldwide and focuses on developingand maintaining suitable standards of performanceand judging while providing a fun filled, family-orientedatmosphere.With over 700 competitions worldwide, NRHA-approvedcompetitors vie for approximately $12 million in prizemoney, plus other awards, annually. NRHA’s premierreining events draw competitors from around the world.The NRHA Futurity, the largest Reining in the world, pays$150,000 to the Open Level 4 Champion and more than $2million total to other show entries.
