The Bible is the Word of Godderived our English word "condescension." Wheneverthe Word of God attributes human characteristics toGod, the figure of speech is called in Greek anthropo¬patheia and in Latin, condescensio. This is the HolySpirit's emphatic marking in II Timothy 3:16. Theemphasis is not on the word "all" or on the word"scripture." The emphasis is on the source, Godbreathed.God put the emphasis where He wanted it;He marked it by this figure of speech.Another example of condescensio is Exodus 4:14which says, "And the anger of the Lord was kindled."God is Spirit; He has no anger. When the Bible saysthe anger of the Lord, what figure is it? Condescensio.Isaiah 52:10 says, "The Lord hath made bare hisholy arm ..." Does the Lord have an arm? No, Hedoes not, but I do and you do.
