Cargo Traffic <strong>and</strong> L<strong>and</strong>ed Weight<br />

Cargo Traffic<br />

In Fiscal Year 2008-09, according to traffic reports submitted by the airlines, <strong>Airport</strong> air cargo volume was<br />

approximately 420,784 metric tons, including U.S. mail, freight <strong>and</strong> express shipments, a decline <strong>of</strong> 129,742 metric<br />

tons (-23.6%) compared to reported cargo volume for Fiscal Year 2007-08. A total <strong>of</strong> approximately 242,540 metric<br />

tons <strong>of</strong> international cargo, mail, freight <strong>and</strong> express shipments were h<strong>and</strong>led at the <strong>Airport</strong> during Fiscal<br />

Year 2007-08, compared to approximately 178,245 metric tons <strong>of</strong> domestic cargo, mail, freight <strong>and</strong> express<br />

shipments. The <strong>Airport</strong> was ranked 14th in the United States in terms <strong>of</strong> air cargo volume in Calendar Year 2008,<br />

according to final 2008 data from the ACI. See also “SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT–Competition.”<br />

Compared to Fiscal Year 2007-08, domestic cargo <strong>and</strong> mail traffic tonnage decreased 50,176 metric tons<br />

(-22.0%) <strong>and</strong> international cargo <strong>and</strong> mail traffic tonnage decreased 79,565 metric tons (-24.7%) during Fiscal<br />

Year 2008-09. The leading component for the decline in cargo tonnage is a decrease in consumer spending in the<br />

nation <strong>and</strong> abroad due to the global recession.<br />

Compared with the first six months (July through December) <strong>of</strong> Fiscal Year 2008-09, total cargo tonnage<br />

decreased 12,681 metric tons (-5.6%); domestic cargo <strong>and</strong> mail traffic tonnage decreased 12,390 metric tons (­<br />

12.7%) <strong>and</strong> international cargo <strong>and</strong> mail traffic tonnage decreased 292 metric tons (-0.2%) during the first six<br />

months (July through December) <strong>of</strong> Fiscal Year 2009-10.<br />

Total cargo tonnage in December 2009 increased 6,195 metric tons (19.7%), domestic cargo <strong>and</strong> mail<br />

traffic increased 2,445 metric tons 17.4%) <strong>and</strong> international cargo <strong>and</strong> mail traffic increased 3,751 metric tons<br />

(21.6%) compared to December 2008.<br />
