Message from the President“Since you get more joy outof giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought intothe happiness that you are able to give.” --Eleanor RooseveltGiving gifts is on the minds of many atthis time of year – especially after thegreat Winter Wishes - Holiday Happeningshopping experience. We think about what we want to giveothers and make lists of gifts that we wish to receive. This timeof year also encourages us to think about more ways that wecan help those who are in need. The overwhelming generosityI have witnessed during the holidays makes this time of year soincredibly special. As members of the Junior League of Lubbock, we have beenbuilding upon this premise for over 50 years - of generous givingand sharing in the lives of those in our community – throughour time, energy, and passion for the mission. It is this collectiveeffort that allows us the talent and resources to do far more tobuild a better community than any one of us could do alone– every single year! What gifts are we, the JLL, giving this year towards building abetter community?•The JLL provides volunteer training and leadership opportunitiesthat help us to become more effective in our community. These skills are a lifetime gift used by Sustaining and currentmembership at numerous other nonprofits within Lubbock. Ihave heard countless times that JLL volunteers are some of thebest-trained volunteers in the business. Just imagine the impactthat the membership has made through trained service over thepast 50+ years – and counting.• The giving through the Food 2 Kids program keeps increasing. At last count, we were providing over 860 food sacks EACHWEEK. In addition, community recognition and grants haveallowed the JLL an enhanced opportunity to address this need.• Increased exposure of the JLL Endowment Fund. Oncethis fund reaches its corpus of $500,000, the JLL will be ableto increase its community giving beyond Holiday Happeningprofits.* Increased childhood obesity education and awareness throughthe Kids in the Kitchen programs.• Service - Over 20,000 hours donated yearly by our volunteersas Women Building Better Communities through CommunityShifts, Meals on Wheels, Food 2 Kids, and Kids in the Kitchen– just to name a few.By Amy SikesPresident• The gift of health – yours! – Research shows that volunteeringleads to better health! Source: “The Health Benefits of Volunteering”,from The Corporation for National and Community Service.• Smiles and Encouragement – to hungry children, houseboundelderly, the community of Lubbock, and each other.• Friendships. One of the things that make the JLL so specialis that it not only provides us with the platform to substantiallyimprove our community, but it also enhances the experience bygiving back to us.Thank you for your gifts – your time, your passion, your smiles– your friendship!New Year’s Resolutions:If you are having trouble making your New Year’s resolutions, let me share with you something I read last year in “The Ledger”– a publication of the Junior League of Longview. It originallyappeared in 1968, written by Kitty Booth. It is humorous – butshares some timeless wisdom. I hope you enjoy!“Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I amgrowing older, and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatalhabit of thinking I must say something on every subject and onevery occasion. Release me from craving to try to straighten outeverybody’s affairs.”“Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all– but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends in the end.”“Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details. Giveme wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on aches and pains. They are increasing, and the love of rehashing them is becomingsweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough toenjoy the tales of other’s pains – but help me to endure themwith patience.”“I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humilityand a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clashwith the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson thatoccasionally I may be mistaken.”“Keep me reasonably sweet. I do not want to be a Saint – someof them are so hard to live with – but a sour old person is one ofthe crowning works of the devil!”“Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, andtalents in unexpected people. Give me the grace to tell them so.”Many blessings to you and your family during this special time of giving!Sincerely,Amy Sikes2008-2009 President

Training CommitteeTraining CommitteeBy Ellen Wallace & Holly KennedyThe Training Committee is comprisedof Sharon Cassel,Leslianne Emery,Holly Kennedy, Kristina Keyton, TamaraMancini, Susan Rowley-Slowik, Ellen Wallace, and our Sustaining Advisor, ShelbyAnderson. We work together to providetraining to the members of the JuniorLeague of Lubbock. I would like to sharewith you what the Training Committee has completed overthe past few months...We were eager for our first general meeting of the year to introducethe “Elevator Speech”. What is an “Elevator Speech”you might ask? An “Elevator Speech” is a to-the-point speechabout why you are member of the Junior League of Lubbock. If you were to be ridingan elevator and a personasked, “Why are you in theJunior League of Lubbock?”you would want to be able toanswer that person’s questionwith ease and before the elevatorride was over. We all havebeen asked this question andsometimes we know exactlywhat we want to say, but weare unable to formulate a puttogetherresponse, so, duringthe September General Meeting,we all worked on our “ElevatorSpeeches”. It was a greattraining and we all should continueto practice, our “ElevatorSpeeches”.As a membership, we weretruly blessed to have ChristieDevitt speak to us about women’sbreast health and early detection of breast cancer at ourOctober General Meeting. Christie delivered such a beautifulspeech and shared her personal story of being diagnosedwith breast cancer while pregnant with her second child.Christie is proud to say that she is a breast cancer survivorand is raising a very healthy baby girl. At the end of Chris-tie’s speech she was greeted by a standingovation from the Junior League of Lubbock. The Training Committee was thrilled to beable to offer such an awesome educationalspeaker for our October General Meeting. At the November General Meeting, BeckyHudson, the president of Pilot Club of Lubbock, shared information with our membership about thenon-profit organization whose main focus is to help individualswith Autism, Alzheimer’s, Downs Syndrome and dementia. Most recently the organization has helped launch the ProjectLifesaver program here on the South Plains. Project Lifesaveris a search and rescue program intended for those withdementia, Alzheimer’s disease,Autism and Downs Syndrome. The program accomplishes thisgoal by placing personalizedradio transmitter bracelets onindividuals who are afflictedby Alzheimer’s and other RelatedMental Dysfunction Disorders(ARMD). With the help ofthe specialized bracelets, localemergency teams will be able tolocate missing persons withinan average of 30 minutes. Sofar, with the aid of the bracelets, more than 1,500 people in theUnited States have been locatedand rescued. The LubbockCounty Sheriff’s Office officiallykicked off the program in July. For more information about theProject Lifesaver program, contactthe Lubbock County Sheriff’sOffice. The Training Committee is currently working on providing trainingfor the remaining General Meetings as well as training forTraining Week. The committee members have such wonderfuland new ideas and we are looking forward to showcasing theirtalents in the months to come.

The Volunteer GiftThe Volunteer GiftBy Mitzi ZiegnerPublic Relations ChairHow fortunate I was tohave the opportunity to attend the12th Annual Cornucopia Luncheonwhere this year’s recipients of theVolunteer Center of Lubbock’s Get InvolvedAwards were honored. It wasindeed a lovely occasion where manyvery deserving individuals, organizationsand programs were recognized.Among the honorees were Cathy Allen, active member,Donna Snodgrass, sustainer and our Junior League ofLubbock, Inc. signature program, Food 2 Kids.Cathy Allen was chosen for a GetInvolved award in recognition ofher extensive service in the areaof cultural diversity. Cathy has impactedthe lives of many in Lubbock, the South Plains and acrossthe state of Texas through tirelessvolunteer service. She has beeninvolved with Girl Scouts, YWCA,Buckner’s Children’s Home, LubbockHousing Finance Corporation,Lubbock Independent SchoolDistrict’s Foundation for Excellence,My Father’s House, MentorTech, Leadership Texas AlumnaeAssociation, Texas Court AppointedSpecial Advocates, LubbockChamber of Commerce and, luckyfor us, she manages to make timefor the Junior League of Lubbockas well! In Cathy’s many volunteerjobs with various organizations, she continually provides astrong sense of community and aninclusive spirit regardless of the age, gender, ethnicity orbackground of those she has the opportunity to work foror with.Donna Snodgrass graciously received the prestigious RayJ. Diekemper Lifetime of Community Service Award. Mrs.Snodgrass has served as a volunteer in many capacitiesfrom her work as a Sunday school and music teacher at FirstUnited Methodist Church to her work as a member of theJunior League of Lubbock. The life of Donna and her familywas forever changed and impacted when, in 1983, her16 year old daughter, Mary Jane, was tragically killed by adrunk driver shortly before Mother’s Day. This horrific turnof events might have crushed the spirit of many. Instead,Donna Snodgrass chose to turn her heartbreak into courageand the opportunity to again serve others. Since theaccident that robbed the Snodgrass family of a cherisheddaughter and sister, Donna has worked tirelessly to educatethe people of the South Plains about the dangers associatedwith the selfish act of drinking anddriving. Her service includes leadershipwith education and advocacyprograms such as Mothers AgainstDrunk Driving, Shattered Dreams,Project Graduation and the VictimsImpact Panel. For the past 25 years,Donna Snodgrass has given of hertime in the hope that it might preventothers from suffering the devastatingloss of a family member orfriend. All who know Donna knowthat she serves not with bitternessor anger, but with a gentleness ofsprit and grace.Food 2 Kids was honored as aneducation program for the impactmade to children in our communitythough the provision of bags of kidfriendly, nutritious, non-perishablefood items weekly to more than800 Lubbock Independent SchoolDistrict children at 16 elementarycampuses. Of course, this programwould not be possible without the Junior League of Lubbock’spartnership with the Lubbock Independent SchoolDistrict and the South Plains Food Bank. Food 2 Kids also receivesgenerous support from local businesses like UnitedSupermarkets and Wal-Mart, as well as donations from manyindividuals and organizations in our community.(Continued on following page)

Placement SpotlightPlacement SpotlightWhat does the PlacementCouncil do?Simply put, your Placement Council ischarged with making sure each memberis fulfilling her requirements as describedin the bylaws and her membershipagreement. Sounds really dry andimpersonal right? In many ways it is.There’s quite a bit of administration involved in trackingthose requirements for the entire League, and sometimesit’s not a warm fuzzy job.But please don’t lose sight of the fact that those pesky JuniorLeague requirements are the building blocks for all thegreat things the Junior League of Lubbock has accomplishedin our community. Fund raiser shifts and quotas have helpedus raise money to address community needs; communityshifts allow us to share our greatest resource, our members, with organizations in need of manpower hours; and in ourgeneral meetings we take care of the business of running anefficient league so that we can continue meeting needs inour community. Each member has a placement that in someway helps the Junior League of Lubbock help others in ourcommunity and in our world.I want to assure you that the amazing ladies that make upthe 2008-2009 Placement Council want to be more thanjust ‘League requirement scorekeepers’, but to do that weBy Virginia DortonPlacement Vice Presidentneed your help.First of all, get to know your placement advisor. Lookher up online, in the purple book or just hunt her down ata meeting! Whether you’re an old-timer who feels like youdon’t need a placement advisor, a new active who doesn’treally understand what a placement advisor does or somevariation of the two, it never hurts to have an extra friend/ally/advocate/supporter in your corner.Let us know what’s going on in your life. If you’re planninga wedding, studying for the bar, recovering from surgery, planning a month-long cruise to Fiji or your in-laws are movingin with you for the next 6 months, etc. let your placementadvisor know. These things don’t mean that you can disregardyour placement or membership requirements, but by knowingabout them ahead of time or when they happen, we cantry to help you plan the best approach to live your busy lifeand get your junior league requirements met.Ask questions. If you have questions about the JuniorLeague of Lubbock and you don’t know where to go toget the answers, ask your placement advisor. She might notknow the answer, but she can find it out for you.Remember our Mission! Not everyone joined the JuniorLeague of Lubbock for the same reason, but hopefully we allwant to accomplish the same things; promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the communitythrough the effective action of trained volunteers. The Volunteer Gift(Continued from previous page)Congratulations again to these very deserving honorees!I would also like to take this opportunity to thank myfabulous committee members who worked with me duringthe nomination process. I am continually inspired bythe work ethic, accomplishments and the level of commitmentthe members of the Junior League of Lubbockdemonstrate. During this very busy time of year, pleaseknow that on behalf of the membership and the PublicRelations committee, what you do does not go unnoticedand is very much appreciated!A helping hand, a willing heartSometimes that’s all it takes~A simple gesture on someone’s part,But what a difference it makes. That’s just the kind of gift you give,Over and over each day,And we’ll always be glad that you’veChosen to live in such an unselfish way.- Author Unknown

Foundation/NominatingFoundationBy Amy MurphyHow have you preparedyour family for timesof financial instability or crisis? Youhave probably placed money in savingsaccounts and investments, purchasedinsurance and disability policies, andcreated college savings plans for yourchild’s education. But, have you everconsidered what the Junior League of Lubbock is doing toprepare for future financial needs? In fact, the Junior League of Lubbock Foundation, Inc. overseestwo endowments that support the sustainability of our League. The Junior League of Lubbock Endowment Fund was establishedto provide emergency funds for community projects. Can youimagine if one year we were unable to hold Holiday Happeningor if a major crisis impacted Lubbock? Our support of theLubbock community would be diminished. Once we reachour goal, the interest from the JLL Endowment Fund would beavailable to support us during these critical times. In addition, a second endowment was established to supportthe headquarters of the Junior League of Lubbock. Recently,we have had to utilize Junior League funds that could havesupported community projects instead on headquarter itemssuch as new carpet, roofing, and air conditioning. The JLL Endowment Fund has approximately $150,000 and theJLL Headquarter Fund has approximately $122,000. Both mustreach the goal of $250,000 prior to using the interest earnedby the funds. The Foundation Board of Directors, consistingof Actives, Sustainers, and community members, oversee theinvestments and distribution of funds. Holiday Happening 2008Holiday Happening 2008By Dawn Zuerker & Andrea WatsonHoliday Happening Chairman & Publications ChairmanIt’s hard to believe HolidayHappening 2008 –Winter Wishes has comeand gone. For nine months, our committeeand placed people have workedtirelessly to make the event the best itcould be and we hope everyone had agreat time.Despite a down economy, the Junior League of Lubbockand the area community supported our events and ourmerchants once again. Thank you for your support. We can’t wait to announce this spring how successfulthe event was and how much money we will beable to give back to our community. Stay tuned forthat exciting announcement. We brought the style show back toLadies’ Day this year and everyone involvedreally enjoyed the twist of multiplestores displaying different styles ofclothing. We want to thank J. Hoffman’s,Malouf’s and Kristi’s of Plainview forbringing such beautiful clothing andjewelry. We would also like to thank theLeague members who volunteered to model and those whoconvinced their children and husbands to participate. We know that most of our husbands think Holiday Happeningis just for women, so this year we wanted them to knowthey are included, too. That’s why we invited Ray Bonner,The Outdoor Chef, to come teach everyone the secrets ofgrilling and smoking. He brought wonderful samples andrecipes to share and we all had a great time. The best part of the evening, though, was our Fire and IceBenefit Drawing. This year we had three winners and acouple of them provided some of the best entertainmentof the evening. Each year, the Holiday Happening Committee looks at theprevious year’s fundraiser evaluations and uses those to decidewhat they want to change. One of our focuses wasto make the League’s Sustainers feel more appreciated. Toaccomplish that, we added a Sustainer Shopping Hour toSneak Peek. Our League would not be as strong as it is without thesewomen and this was one small way to say thank you.Sneak Peek was once again fantastic. PMDC Fall UpdatePMDC Fall UpdateBy Crystal EdwardsPMDC ChairmanThe Provisional class of 2008– 2009 is nearing their “graduation”to Active status. They have workedhard, learned lots and had so muchfun!September was jam packed withthree tours to local organizationsthat make a difference, not only in our community, butaround the world. First stop was Ronald McDonaldHouse where they witnessed families having dinner ina comfortable home-like environment instead of a hospitalcafeteria or bed side in a hospital room; one ofthose things we take for granted living in a communitywith medical facility access.Next we were off to Breedlove Dehydration Plantwhere the ladies had dinner. They were served two differentsoups that are the staple product shipped to the60 countries served by this little plant in Lubbock, TX.– pretty tasty to tell the truth; I had the potato & carrot.I think I can say with certainty they were amazed thatfor the cost of a Venti Mocha, 100 people could havebeen served that same bowl of soup.We ended the evening at South Plains Food Bank. Theladies appreciated becoming familiar with an organizationwe have such a connection to in Food 2 Kids.To wrap up September, the Provisionals joined the JLLBoard for dessert and a fantastic training session. Theylearned how Nominating works, who chooses whom, how Exec – Elect chooses the following years CommitteeChairs, etc. Not only a learning experience for theProvisionals, but for some of our newer Board memberswho’ve only been in League a short time. How can you be in Junior League without havingtoured Women’s Protective Services? A JLL project thatat inception was quite controversial has now becomeone of the largest facilities of its kind in the State ofTexas. October being Domestic Awareness Month wasthe perfect time to take the Provisionals through thisunbelievable facility.(Continued on following page)

To many, it’s Thanksgiving. To Junior Leaguers, it’s all about Holiday Happening. To Provisionals, it was about the direct line betweenHoliday Happening’s success and agencies that likelywouldn’t exist if Junior League hadn’t been there tohelp get them started, like Children’s Advocacy Center. An eye-opening tour of this facility immediatelyfollowed by a tour of the Civic Center for HolidayHappening brought these ladies to such a profoundconclusion and furthered their ambitions to be a partof this organization. We as a league and as a community have so muchto look forward to from this group of women. I amanxious to see them complete their course, take onactive roles and make a lasting impact.

Repeat BoutiqueRepeat BoutiqueBy Dawne FranksRepeat Boutique Assistant ChairmanGreat things have been happeningat the Repeat Boutiquethis year. An Ad-Hoccommittee was formed in early spring2008 to discuss and investigate ways ofimproving the Repeat Boutique bothphysically and financially. Members of thiscommittee are: Melanie Ragain, DeborahFinlayson, Kendra Lansdell, Beth Hendricks,Amy Stephens and Sustainers Leslie Moss and Elizabeth Nelson. These ladies have great ideas and ways that the Repeat Boutiquecan continue to better serve the community and our membership.Amy Stephens and I took the advice and direction of theAd-Hoc committee and began implementing the suggestedchanges with the help of our wonderful Repeat Boutique Committee. Our committee members are Judy Benitez, Sarah Cude,Michelle Evitt, Holly Latham, Tamara Mancini and Kayla Wright. These ladies have done an outstanding job and have embracedthe “Bring It” theme for the RB this year.As of June 1, weno longer use thecomputer systemto generate tags forour merchandise. Wehave gone back tothe handwritten tagsof the past. This hasbeen a wonderful andwelcomed change. Our shift workersare able to work theorders coming in, tag them and get the merchandise out tothe sales floor during their three hour shift. We also held ourFall Turn Stock the last weekend in July, two months aheadof schedule. This allowed us to get a fresh new look for thestore and to bring new merchandise to the sales floor. Weadded five clothing racks and reset the sales floor to allowfor the overabundance of fall and winter merchandise thatwe brought out. Our reward for this change was a $1000in sales the Monday after turn stock. It is our goal this yearto maintain a healthy stock level of merchandise, as we areadding new items daily. From June 2008 through October2008, our total amount of merchandise donated to the RepeatBoutique is $118,741.07. This is an awesome number thatwe have reached by donations from the membership and thepublic. Thank you for your continued support. We could notdo it without you. Do you think you might be the one to earnthe incentive prize for highest amount donated for the leagueyear? The award will be presented at May Dinner and DawnZuerker has won it each year for as long as I can remember. Will it be someone new this year? Our challenge to you isthis: clean out your closets, your attics, your garages, and yourstorage houses. While your at it, talk your parents, siblings andrelatives into doing the same. Bring everything you can findand do not want to store anymore. If you are in doubt, bring itto the Repeat Boutique. We can sell it! Can you imagine howfull the Repeat Boutique will be and the type of sales it willgenerate? With the implementation of the new changes, we have beenable to increase our sales and maintain a fresh look. June 2008through October 2008, our sales have totaled $46,400.18. Thisis an increase in sales over last year’s sales during the sametime frame by $10,305.36. Our monthly sales are steadilyincreasing each month, and we still have six months of theLeague year to go. We can keep up these great numbers, butwe need your continued support of the Repeat Boutique. If you have not been by the Repeat Boutique lately, stop inand see what is new, you never know what you might find. Ifound a rocking pair of shoes this summer and have gottennumerous compliments on them and they were only $3. Whata find! Needless to say, I have been promoting the RB everychance I get. Can you do the same?If you have not worked any fundraising shifts at the RB lately, consider choosing us again. It is a great way to meet our provisionalclass and also get a sneak peak at the merchandise heading outto the sales floor. What treasure will you find? Thank you againto all the Actives and Provisionals who have worked shifts thisyear, you ladies are awesome and we could not do it without you!Remember the RB and continue to “Bring It!”

AJLI Fall ConferenceAJLI Fall ConferenceBy Melanie RagainPresident Elect, Junior League of LubbockOn Thursday, October 23 -Saturday, October 25, 2008,Amy Sikes and I attended the AJLI FallConference in Kansas City, MO. (Fall Conference, held every year in the fall-easy toremember, is designed for the Presidentand President Elect of Junior Leagues.)Friday and Saturday we attended sessionson different topics. There were sessions on: Risk Management,We Need to Talk, Engaging Membership Meetings, How toGet the Best Results from Your Board, Public Relations, andFinance. Every time that I travel to a Junior League conference,I cannot imagine what more they can teach me, and then Iam amazed at how full my head becomes with information insuch a shot period of time. Simply put: HEADACHE!AJLI also announced that they will be updating the AJLI websiteand doing some things to keep up with the times. They calledfor Leagues to volunteer to be in the pilot program; however, the spots were limited. I submitted our name and a plea topick us (Amy warned me to be careful!)...and low and beholdthey did pick us! This project is going to need the assistanceand knowledge of our wonderful office manager, Dodie. (Ihaving been avoiding her for weeks and I must continue tosay flattering statements about her!) It will be an incredibleexperience to be included in something so exciting! There is an exhibit room at every conference. Digital Cheetahwas there and once again they bragged on how computersavvy Dodie is and how much they enjoy working with her.AJLI Boutique also had an exhibit. You can find these itemson the AJLI website if you are looking to purchase someLeague gear.We were fortunate to attend the Junior League of Kansas,MO Holiday Mart on Friday night which was at OverlandPark Convention Center in Kansas! So across the state borderwe went! It was very similar to our Holiday Happening. They have the same challenge we have: How to turn a multipurpose concrete arena type room into a delightful holidayshopping experience! It was beautiful and we happened tosee some of the same vendors that come to Lubbock forHoliday Happening. All of the handouts from the conference are available for youto download by going to our website, www.jllubbock.com.After you sign onto our website, click on the AJLI website linkon the left hand side column. You should find the informationon the right hand side of the AJLI home page.It was publicized that the AJLI Board of Directors is proposinga new Vision Statement. Our current AJLI Vision reads:Through the power of association, Junior Leagues strengthencommunities by embracing diverse perspectives, buildingpartnerships and inspiring shared solutions. The proposedVision reads: The Junior League: Women around the world ascatalysts for lasting community change. AJLI defines vision,“as a description of the organization as you WANT it to be...seeing the optimal future for the organization. It is best whenit is MEMORABLE and INSPIRING.” I will pass on more of thisinformation in future publications. In addition to this, we had time to interact with otherLeagues. We were able to spend time with our sister leaguesfrom West Texas. Research & Development ProjectsResearch and Development ProjectsBy Robin ConkwrightResearch and DevelopmentResearch and Development(R&D) spent the 2007-2008 year focusing on Food 2 Kids (F2K).The committee worked tirelessly to supportthis initiative and to help create placementswhich now serve as full-committeeplacements on the F2K Committee. Anothercharge for the R&D committee was tocreate a five-year financial commitment towards F2K to ensurethe continuation of this program that benefits needy childrenin Lubbock and hopefully the surrounding area in the future. This year, R&D is working with Cathleen Reid, Chairman of “Kidsin the Kitchen.” In the past, “Kids in the Kitchen” has primarilybeen a week-long event to encourage healthy habits amongchildren. This initiative is supported by AJLI with Leaguesaround the country participating in some capacity. With thedangers associated with childhood obesity and diabetes, R&Dand “Kids in the Kitchen” were charged with creating a moreyear-round aspect to this project while retaining several of thetraditional week-long events as well. One major project that has been developed is what is knownas “Camp Healthy Kids.” This will be a week-long day camp inthe summer primarily for 4th-6th grade girls utilizing the YWCAfacility. The participating girls will participate in sessions onexercise and fitness, body image, and nutrition among othertopics. Guest speakers will serve to inform and motivatethe participants, and this will be a placement opportunityfor JLL members beginning the summer of 2009! For thosemembers who remember day camps as placements, they willremember this as a great way to contribute to the communityand participate in a task-complete placement at the same time.A “trial run” of “Camp Healthy Kids” took place on Saturday,December 6 at the YWCA.Other “Kids in the Kitchen” ideas that are in the research phaseare a “Fun Run” possibly around the Christmas season, parenteducation (pertaining to nutrition and healthy choices) at thearea Headstart facilities, and events in conjunction with UnitedSupermarkets. Kids in the Kitchen Chair, Cathleen Reid, hasbrought much enthusiasm and passion to this endeavor andis always thinking of new and creative ways to influence thechildren of our community to make better lifestyle choiceswhich will have a positive impact on their future and the futureof the community. It is the hope of R&D that “Kids in the Kitchen” will be a sustainableproject for many years to come with the necessary volunteers andfunding to meet the needs of the children served. As childhoodobesity and diabetes continue to threaten the health of ourchildren, “Kids in the Kitchen” serves to meet a very real need inour community to educate children and their parents on healthychoices that will lead to a healthier future.AJLI Fall Conference(Continued from previous page)Wichita Falls, Lubbock, San Angelo), plus a few other Texansthat we are trying to make into west TX gals. The other isof Amy and me in front of a Christmas store in the mall thatwas connected to our hotel! I wore my Holiday Happeningshirt on Saturday to the meetings. I would encourage you towear your shirt out in public. People will stop you and ask,“What is Food 2 Kids?“ You can reply, it is a program of theJunior League of Lubbock. We send food sacks home withLISD elementary students to help supplement meals for thekids over the weekend. For some it may be all they get. Theywill then ask you about how many sacks we send a week. You can reply that it fluctuates, but it can be anywherefrom 750 to 800. Then watch their face! Their jaw will dropand they will say, WOW! And you will walk off proud (afteryou tell them that they can donate to Food 2 Kids) becausewhatever your JLL placement is for this year, you are helpingmake a difference. So please wear that shirt! The weather was beautiful and we saw what fall looks likein Missouri! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity tocontinue to learn and lead.

Kids in the KitchenKids in the KitchenBy Cathleen ReidKids in the Kitchen ChairmanKids in the Kitchenis a Signature Projectof the Junior League of Lubbock developedin conjunction with the Associationof Junior Leagues International(AJLI) in response to alarming statisticsthat an increasingly large percentageof children and adolescents in Canada,Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States are overweightor at risk of becoming overweight. This year the Junior League of Lubbock is working onexpanding the program to a year around project. The Kidsin the Kitchen Committee has been hard at work and havehad our first two events. Both took place on the 6th ofDecember. We held a one-day Camp Healthy Kids event. This event incorporated Fitness, Nutrition and a Workshopon Body Image and Self-Esteem. The attendees were girlsin the 4th, 5th or 6th grade. They did yoga and a bodyimage workshop where they learned what a real personwould look like if they had Barbie’s measurements. All ofthe girls quickly decided they didn’t want to look like her. They ended the morning with a water aerobics class. Thissummer, Camp Healthy Kids will be a week long event andthere will be 45 girls from 4th to 6th grade. Each day willbegin at 9 AM and finish at Noon. The girls will be dividedinto 3 groups and rotate through Fitness, Nutrition andWorkshop events. Each day the events will be different. The goal of this camp is to make a more lasting impact onthe girls.Upcoming Events:• We have another United Market Street (50th Street) eventscheduled for February 14, 2009. This event will be Kids inthe Kitchen Cupid Nutrition Bingo.• Knipling Center event with Covenant on March 7, 2009.The theme will be “GameDay, Hit a Healthy Home Run”. Wewill have more stations this year. This will help make thegroups smaller and more fun.• We are researching an Early Childhood Education plan. This may be a trial program this Spring.• We will be taking a Nutritional program to the ROK(Reaching Our Kids) after-school program and LubbockChildren’s Home.• Kids in the Kitchen along with Research and Developmentare exploring the idea of a Junior League Jingle Fun Run.This would be sometime during the Holiday Season. Themonies raised from the event would go back into Kids inthe Kitchen to ultimately benefit more children. We also had a Holiday Nutrition Bingo at United MarketStreet (50th Street) on the 6 of December. This was a hugesuccess. The children and their parents visited 6 differentstations to learn about nutrition and sampled healthy snacksas they were shopping. As they left, they returned theirfilled bingo card for a Kids in the Kitchen slingback bag.
