General Manager’s LetterIn order to improve security at the Club,especially at night, we are weighingthe installation of an automatic gateat the pontoon entrance. After 10 pm,access at the pontoon would be limitedas entering Club property would requirea card. The intent is to stop commercialjunk operators from unloading theirpassengers at the Club – a recurrent andgrowing problem – and to block themfrom abusing our private property andcompromising security.In February 2014, again we mustsuffer a bit of noise and disturbance aswe repair the expansion joint betweenpool and patio. As such, the patioand part of the carpark below will beinaccessible for three to four weeks.I shall give more precise dates as therepair plans firm up. We will host specialfood events and a festival in the Harbourroom to counter the patio’s loss.Pool hoursPlease note that, as we do during thecooler weather every year, we havereduced the hours of operation for theswimming pool. The pool will be open12 noon to 8 pm Monday-Friday and from8 am to 9 pm on Saturdays, Sundays andpublic holidays. Longer opening hours willresume in April along with warmer weather.Please note that as required by Hong Konglaw, the pool must close in February toundergo its yearly maintenance.Other mattersThe Club has organised another golfouting on Wednesday, 15 January, at theDeep Water Bay Golf Club. Golfers withor without an HKGA card may join us bycontacting my office.As noted in previous issues of Horizons,in January we will close the Club’s DVDlibrary and end all charges due to advancingmedia formats that are rendering DVDsobsolete. However, the Club will retain themore popular DVDs in the third floor Bridgeroom’s library. We will now treat DVDsas we do the books – you bring one, youtake one, in an exchange system of Clubmembers. We may well have the samesuccess as we had with our books, withbetter and wider choices.The Club is nearly finished withchanges to Club rules and regulations afternearly a year of work. Soon, I hope in earlyJanuary, you will receive revisions to thebye-laws with major changes and additionshighlighted.
