Mellon <strong>Foundation</strong>, and is administered by Theatre Communications Group.###The mission of the <strong>Doris</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>Charitable</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> is to improve the quality of people's livesthrough grants supporting the performing arts, wildlife conservation, medical research and theprevention of child maltreatment, and through preservation of the cultural and environmentallegacy of <strong>Doris</strong> <strong>Duke</strong>'s properties. Established in 1996, the foundation supports four national grantmaking programs in the areas described above. It also oversees three properties that were ownedby <strong>Doris</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> in Hillsborough, New Jersey; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Newport, Rhode Island. Thefoundation's activities are guided by the will of <strong>Doris</strong> <strong>Duke</strong>, who endowed the foundation withfinancial assets that currently total approximately $1.7 billion. As of December 31, 2005, thefoundation has approved approximately $<strong>43</strong>7 million in grants to nonprofit organizationsthroughout the United States. Mellon <strong>Foundation</strong>developed a joint Theatre Initiative that supports two programs: the Leading National TheatresProgram for theatres invited by the foundations to apply; and the New Generations Program,cooperatively designed by Theatre Communications Group, the <strong>Doris</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>Charitable</strong><strong>Foundation</strong> and the Andrew W. Mellon <strong>Foundation</strong>.The Andrew W. Mellon <strong>Foundation</strong> (www.mellon.org) is a private philanthropic institutionwith assets of approximately $4.8 billion; AWMF makes grants on a selective basis toinstitutions of higher education, independent libraries, centers for advanced study, museums, artconservation, and performing arts organizations. The foundation's Performing Arts Programfocuses on achieving long-term results by providing multi-year grants to leading organizations inthe disciplines of music, theatre, dance, and opera. Annual giving in the area of the performingarts has averaged $17.3 million per year since 2000, not including approximately $20 million indisaster recovery relief grants made to New York based performing arts organizations in thewake of September 11, 2001. In 2004 the Andrew W.
