Five straight shutout victories fueled the surge, includinga 1-0 win over then-13th ranked Clayton State on Oct. 8 and a convincing4-0 victory over rival Carson-Newman on Oct. 12. The onlyblemish on the Pioneers’ record was a 2-1 double-overme loss atSAC champion Anderson on Oct. 15.The Pioneers carried their momentum all the way to secondplace in the SAC, finishing with a strong 6-1-2 record in conferenceplay. Tusculum was upset in the conference quarterfinals by Lenoir-Rhyne by a 3-0 score, bringing the season to an end with a 7-8-3overall record.Tusculum reaped the benefits of their strong performancewhen the postseason awards were announced, as Vital was namedSAC Coach of the Year and freshman defender Maas Rubio led agroup of six Pioneers honored as members of the All-SAC team.Rubio was the lone Pioneer to earn first-team All-SAC honors, while second-team recognion went to forwards Javier Porllo andPontus Rosen, midfielders Kjel Paulsen and Roberto Pimentel anddefender Fredrik Muren.12 - 2012 Tusculum Men’s Soccer

TUSCULUM COLLEGETUSCULUM HISTORYTusculum College is the oldest college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the naon.In addion, Tusculum is the oldest coeducaonal instuon affiliated with the PresbyterianChurch (U.S.A.) and an early naonal pioneer in the admission of women. Tusculumaccepted women students early in its history, and it is notable that by the turn of the 20thcentury more than half of its students were women. The roots of Tusculum College are buried deep in early American froner history. In 1794, George Washington was president of a young country and the state of Tennesseewas sll two years away from becoming a reality. In what is now East Tennessee,Hezekiah Balch and Samuel Doak, Presbyterian ministers educated at the College of NewJersey (now Princeton University), were ministering to the pioneers of what was the southwesternfroner of the United States. They also desired to meet the educaonal needs ofthese Scots-lrish selers. Doak and Balch were visionaries ulmately seeking the samegoals through the rival colleges they established.Tusculum College as it now exists descends from two schools. The first, GreenevilleCollege, was chartered in September 1794 by the General Assembly of the Territory of theUnited States South of the Ohio River, and established by Hezekiah Balch. Samuel Doak andhis son Samuel Witherspoon Doak founded the second as Tusculum Academy in 1818.Tusculum Academy operated in a log cabin adjacent to the present site of TusculumCollege. When the academy became Tusculum College in 1844, Andrew Johnson, who wasto become 17th President of the United States, was one of its trustees.A merger in 1868 formed Greeneville and Tusculum College. In 1908, Greeneville andTusculum College merged with Washington College, creang Washington and Tusculum College. This union dissolved in 1912, and thus evolved modern-day TusculumCollege. The College received formal accreditaon by the Southern Associaon of Colleges and Schools 15 years later. The College takes its name from the ancient Roman town where the great statesman and educator Cicero had an academy at his villa. Cicero taught what are nowcalled the liberal arts. They actually were constuted by the pracces a cizen must develop to parcipate effecvely in leading his or her community - to play a vitalrole in civic affairs.TUSCULUM ACADEMICSAs a Civic Arts instuon, Tusculum College prepares students to be effecve cizens, recognizing that they will need praccal wisdom to parcipate in communiesand enrich lifeme experiences.Tusculum’s academic calendar is different from all but three other colleges in the country. The academic year is divided into two semesters and our students takefour 3 1/2 week courses each semester, totaling eight courses for the year. Classes are taught one at a me, with a four-day break in between. Three 3 1/2 week summersessions are also offered. This allows our students to complete course requirements for the baccalaureate degree in four calendar years. Our unique Civic Arts program is being used as a model for other colleges and universies that seek to promote community, responsibility, and civic development. The Carnegie Foundaon for the Advancement of Teaching has recognized Tusculum as one of about a dozen schools (including Duke University and the University ofNotre Dame) with a strong commitment to those ideals. As part of our emphasis on service-learning, we ask students to assess the needs of the community and complete a project to address those needs. Beyond helpingkey populaons, Tusculum students gain valuable experience in solving problems, appreciang differences, and working with others.Tusculum College is a learning community where students and faculty members spend concentrated blocks of me together exploring important areas of knowledge, developing and refining thinking and communicaon skills, wrestling with the me-less controversial issues that characterize the human condion, condion, and applying themselvesto the praccal praccal soluon soluon of problems.Whether in the tradional tradional on-campus Bachelor of Arts programs or in the eveningBachelor of Science and Master of Arts programs for working adult-students, TusculumCollege’s disncve disncve academic calendar lets students concentrate on learning one subjectat a me. me. It’s a tradion tradion grounded in the belief that we best realize the potenal potenal of eachindividual when faculty members and students work closely together with the ulmate ulmateaim of enriching the lives of our students and preparing them to contribute posively posively totheir communies.communies.For many tradional tradional students, an inial inial reason for choosing Tusculum is our focusedcalendar, which allows students to take one course at a me. me.For others, its our disncve disncve programs of study, from specialized areas such as Athlec AthlecTraining, Business Administraon, Administraon, and Museum Studies to strong arts and sciences areassuch as Biology, English, and Psychology.Tusculum is well known throughout East Tennessee for the effecveness effecveness of its TeacherEducaon Educaon programs. Students are well prepared for careers in early childhood and elementaryeducaon, educaon, in several secondary educaon educaon subject areas, in K-12 programs in PhysicalEducaon Educaon and Visual Arts, and in Special Educaon. Educaon. But what oen oen seals prospecve prospecve students’decisions to join Tusculum’s community is the people.Tusculum aracts aracts topflight professors for the same reason that we aract aract students: smallclasses with close interacon interacon between professors and students, the focused calendarwhich allows concentrated study, and a Civic Arts curriculum that emphasizes community. Our professors are movated and movang. Excited and excing. Whatever the major, you’ll find that Tusculum’s academics are innovave, and that our facultyis commied to the success of our students.THE TUSCULUM CAMPUSLocated in Greeneville, Tenn., Tusculum College lies in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains between Knoxville and the Tri-Cies (Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport).Our wooded 190-acre campus has over 25 buildings, nine of which are listed on the Naonal Register of Historic Places. The Albert Columbus Tate Library, oneof our Naonal Historic Sites, was built in 1910. The library is experiencing a major mul-million dollar renovaon and expansion that will more than double the sizeof the current library facility, bringing our library space to 34,467 square feet. The Tate Library previously encompassed 12,000 square feet, and is incorporated into theexpanded and renovated building. We also have two on-campus museums, one holding archives with materials dang to the College’s beginnings. The Andrew Johnson Presidenal Museum andLibrary includes the Charles Coffin Collecon containing materials from the Collegeís original library, the Andrew Johnson Library containing books, papers, and memorabiliafrom the 17th President of the United States, and the College Archives containing documents related to the history of Tusculum since its founding.Tusculum’s locaon is convenient to shopping and entertainment, and our students enjoy access to such recreaonal opportunies as backpacking, hiking, whitewaterraing, fishing and snow skiing. The city of Greeneville and Greene County have a combined populaon of 65,000. Knoxville and the Tri-Cies are within a 70-mileradius of the campus.2012 Tusculum Men’s Soccer -- 23
