6 The “Conchee”At <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> war, Hitler took countries almost on aday-by-day basis. They were easily crushed before him — Czechoslovakia,Poland, Norway, Holland, and now Brita<strong>in</strong> was <strong>in</strong> perilwith Hitler only 21 miles away from our borders.We were absolutely unprepared. While our factories had beenturn<strong>in</strong>g out toy tra<strong>in</strong>s, teddy bears and dolls, German factorieshad been produc<strong>in</strong>g guns, bombs and planes. Consequently, whenwar was declared, our government issued broomsticks <strong>in</strong>stead ofrifles to <strong>the</strong> Home Guard.Our country panicked. We could no longer r<strong>in</strong>g our church bells,except as a signal that German paratroopers were dropp<strong>in</strong>g uponus. Sentries <strong>in</strong> concrete pillboxes cut our roads <strong>in</strong> half and challengedall travelers. They removed all <strong>the</strong> signposts from <strong>the</strong> roadsto make it more difficult for enemy soldiers to know where <strong>the</strong>ywere.WWII Days. Revival <strong>in</strong> EnglandOn <strong>the</strong> night Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, I was sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a meet<strong>in</strong>gwhen a sister sitt<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d me started cry<strong>in</strong>g out, “No, no,no!” She grabbed her Bible and gloves and pushed her way up<strong>the</strong> row, up <strong>the</strong> aisle, through <strong>the</strong> doors. I heard a fierce crack asher head hit <strong>the</strong> ground, and she began scream<strong>in</strong>g like a rapedwoman on <strong>the</strong> porch.I thought, “God, what is go<strong>in</strong>g on?”Then, I heard, “Oh, Amen, amen, amen.” I turned around andlooked toward <strong>the</strong> screen doors.
