I would go out in the mornings and walk, and I would end upbumping into her. Marion knew I was out early in the mornings, and she would find me. I would go out to meet God, and wouldend up meeting her. Marj knew I had always gone out for walks, but now my walks were a cover-up. More and more in my selfrighteousway, although partly because I felt condemned andhad lost the presence of God, I desired to break it off.One day as I returned home, I looked in the window of our littlehouse where I saw Marj playing the organ. I could hear her singing,“Only Thee, only Thee….” Under a load of guilt, I wentinside, sat down, and then I broke down. “Will you forgive me?”I wept. “I feel so rotten and unfaithful.”For some weeks afterward, I avoided Marion in the meetings. Ididn’t speak to her whenever I would bump into her in town orat the library, but her presence still sorely tempted me. This wenton until, one day, Marj, without talking to me about it beforehand, invited Marion to come to live with us. I couldn’t believeit.“Well,” Marj explained, “I would rather know where you are intruth than to have you out there in the woods.”From the moment Marion came to live with us, God came intothe situation in an extraordinary way. Nobody but we three knewthe marvelous grace God was performing in our lives.Marion had begun her work at the local hospital as little morethan a scrubwoman. From the time that she came to live with us,God blessed her, and she was promoted again and again. Eachtime her pay was increased, she poured it into our home. Inhospitals, bed sheets are torn and discarded, and people leaveclothing behind in the laundry. After a time, the hospital disposesof these items, and Marion brought all kinds of things home forthe children and for us. This was an immense blessing duringthose war years when we were struggling, trying to raise ourlarge family.I had believed I would be the last man in all the world to getinvolved with a girl who wasn’t my wife. As I look back, I amamazed at the grace of God. Like a cube of sugar that dissolves ina cup of hot tea, He finally dissolved the whole messy situation75
