Very few Christians can bear to be slighted.They get hurt, offended, and upset, not understanding that untilyou can sweetly bear having nothing, you cannot bear somethingto the glory of God. Psalm 119:165 says, “Great peace havethey which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” Noteven having nothing.Those meetings went on for hours. I ask myself today, “How didthey differ from meetings that we are in now?” In the Welshrevival, Evans Roberts’ meetings moved from agony to ecstasy— two emotions that we seldom see in meetings today. Thepeople fell to the floor, under the convicting power of the HolySpirit, often screaming out in agony, “I understand!” When theyhad met God and had a release, they moved into ecstasy.In those days back in the 30’s, there was another man, HaroldWebster, who ministered the presence of God. Unless you wereclose to him, you would hardly hear anything. His eyes wouldclose and he would whisper, “Oh Jesus.”Then, the Holy Spirit would come in divine invasion. One personwould start laughing in the Spirit, and then another and another,until gales and gusts of Holy Ghost laughter would sweep over58
the congregation. Sometimes people would stuff handkerchiefsin their mouths trying to stop laughing, and some would cry out,“Lord, I can stand no more; stay Your hand!” Again, there wouldbe a wave of Holy Ghost laughter and they would be away again.I once shared a bed with a man who rocked the bed all night ashe laughed and laughed in the Spirit. I saw people completelyoblivious to everything — to their appearance, or whether theywere on the ground or on a seat, for they were lost in the presenceof God.Man’s trouble spotWhen a dentist gives a patient a local anesthetic, the patient’sjaw becomes so numb, you could strike him and he wouldn’t feelit. Those Holy Ghost invasions were the same sort of thing. Adivine anesthetic temporarily put men’s hearts out of action, allowingGod to go directly to their spirit without an objectionfrom the heart. Then God would show each man in his spirit, thetruth about himself — completely, absolutely, transparently. Afterwards,the man would come back into, shall we say, realization,when the anesthetic had worn off — and the rotten toothhad come out painlessly.In a situation like this, the Spirit of God can invade a man in hisspirit and register something that the man really doesn’t believe.In the Word, Caiaphas says about one man, “It is expedient forus, that one man should die for the people….” (John 11:50) Inhis office as high priest, he had uttered something that he actuallydidn’t believe. I saw this happen with many people, when theanointing on them preceded a work in them, as the Holy Spiritgave the heart an anesthetic.Why the heart? Because it is man’s trouble spot. God says, “Letnot your heart be troubled…” (John 14:1) Being troubled in hisheart is man’s usual reaction to problems or perplexing situations.The only word that God permits the Spirit-led heart tospeak is “Amen.” The Bible says, “And let the peace of God rule inyour hearts…” (Col 3:15), and “That Christ may dwell in yourhearts by faith….” (Eph 3:17) When He rules in the heart, theheart bows to His authority and His truth. This allows God’sSpirit to rule the man’s spirit.59
