Pioneering in the early 30’sI was among the first ones to pioneer for the Assemblies. I hadtheir marquee, their caravan and their equipment, and pioneereda work in Stroud, in Barrow-in-Furness, Walney Island, Maryportand Cumberland. It was not a tremendous work, but there areone or two of those saints continuing today who are from thosedays back in the early 30’s.The work had its problems, though, because I did not see eye-toeyewith the man who was in charge of my ministry. The differencewas that he believed, “Go into all the world and preach theGospel. Put up your tent, start preaching.” I didn’t see it that waybut saw there was a particular place for a particular man at aparticular time. The Holy Ghost forbade Paul to go into Bythinia.Instead, God called him to go into Macedonia. I saw that it isessential for a man to be in the center of God’s will, not to beslap-happy or casual. My supervisor was nearly old enough to bemy grandfather, but even as a young Christian, I knew I sawsomething which he didn’t.When I got to the Lake District, I waited on God to determine ifI should open up meetings in Kendal. How do you tell the differencebetween a lazy man and a man who is waiting on God?From the outside, they both do the same (which is nothing), butthere is a vital distinction on the inside.I had all the equipment of the Assembly of God Evangelical Society.I had their £60 in money (quite a lot in those days), and theytrusted me. But they kept prodding me like a back-seat driverwho keeps pushing you while you are at the wheel, “When areyou going to get started?”I thought, “Well, I can’t get a green light from God, and mysuperiors expect me to move whether I have a green light, redlight or any kind of light.” This situation forced me into a decision.I had done beach work at Morecombe, three meetings aday, six days a week. I had preached at the battery slipway, pioneered,and had a campaign in the Astoria Cafe. I thought, “Well,I’ll hand everything back to the Assemblies of God and leavesweetly,” which I did. It proved to be a sad time for me.36
