These words, floating down over my lifetime, proclaiming God’sfullness, still challenge me. “Bring the bucket.”Meeting Popeye in PortsmouthTeddy and I traveled up and down the country. Instead of preaching at me,they lived at me. The sweetness and presence of God in theirlives made a tremendous impression upon me. I said to thesedear people, “Look, I am supposed to be here ministering toyou, but you are ministering to me without even opening yourmouths. I want what you have, whatever it is.”It was the fruit of the Spirit, rather than the gifts of the Spirit thatimpressed me in their lives. It was not so much by the lure ofpower, as by the wonder of His presence that the Lord drew me.28
When you’ve always lived in the moonlight and then you see thesunshine, you can’t settle for a moonlit existence anymore. So itwas there in Chesterfield in 1932, in Pastor Buckley’s church atBrampton, that I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, meeting God ina new and living way that dealt with all the dryness which haddeveloped in me since college.Because I was now baptized in the Holy Spirit, the Board of Directorsat the college called me to appear before them. “Do youbelieve in speaking with other tongues?” they demanded to know.“Have you spoken with other tongues?” “Are there any othermen afflicted like you in the movement?”“Yes,” I admitted. So, they sent me on my way, expelled from theProtestant Truth Society with three others — thrown out on myneck. Where do I go from here?29
