I can recognize the man I really am in the sight of God. Thisentails God-consciousness rather than self-consciousness.Self-consciousness is linked with people-consciousness. We needto surrender to God in such a way that God can work in us todeliver us from being men-pleasing eye-servants. Too often wedeceive ourselves thinking, “I am rich, and increased with goods,and have need of nothing…” (Rev 3:17) All the while, God issaying, “You don’t know you are ‘wretched, and miserable, andpoor, and blind…’” (Rev 3:17) All I have is in Jesus. I have ablessed bankruptcy that brings me into the sufficiency of God.The price for this is to get rid of my glory.There is no substitute for moving in the will of God. When Istand in the presence of my Saviour, I don’t want Him to look atme and say, “How often I would have guided you. How often Iwould have directed you, ‘…and ye would not!’” (Mat 23:37)Or, “…you did not know the time of your visitation.”(Luke 10:44)Oh, how I covet that place where He will say, “Well done, thougood and faithful servant…” (Matt 25:21) The price for this is toget rid of my glory, my self-esteem, the projection of my personality,my pride, and all that is in me that seeks to be a god insteadof having a God.The only success I now seek is to be faithful, so what I do, I do tothe glory of God. I don’t do anything to meet humanity’s needor to suit my convenience. I don’t minister to project my personalityor to puff up my ego. When the glory of God means to mewhat it means to God, then I will be one with the Father.238
