Mo<strong>the</strong>r asked him if he was ill and he said, “No.” God had answeredmy prayer. I was rid<strong>in</strong>g high <strong>in</strong> my first love, Pray…,Ask…, and it shall be given!Before <strong>the</strong> year was over, conviction overwhelmed Fa<strong>the</strong>r. WhenI <strong>in</strong>vited Arnold Bennett, <strong>the</strong> preacher, to come to our house,Fa<strong>the</strong>r got down on his knees and was gloriously saved! Afterward,Fa<strong>the</strong>r jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church where all three of us attended.Although Mo<strong>the</strong>r was religious, she was still unsaved atthis time.Whenever Fa<strong>the</strong>r would hear an appeal for salvation, I wouldhear a sob, and his hand would be up. Mo<strong>the</strong>r would correcthim, “John, you don’t have to put your hand up, you are saved.”Deeply broken, he would do this every time <strong>the</strong>re was an appeal.Fa<strong>the</strong>r had seven years of salvation, from age 70 to 77,before he went home to be with <strong>the</strong> Lord.I trotted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> water and sank.When I first read <strong>the</strong> story of Peter’s gett<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> boat andwalk<strong>in</strong>g on water to Jesus, I noticed he began to s<strong>in</strong>k when hetook his eyes off Jesus. Jesus went over to him and stretchedforth His hand and <strong>the</strong> moment Peter touched Jesus, he didn’ts<strong>in</strong>k anymore. I also noticed Jesus did not encourage him, but<strong>in</strong>stead, He rebuked Peter, ask<strong>in</strong>g, “O you of little faith, why didyou doubt?” (Matt 14:31)“Peter was wrong,” I concluded. “He could have walked on <strong>the</strong>water, and he did walk on <strong>the</strong> water until he took his eyes offJesus. I am not go<strong>in</strong>g to displease Jesus. I am go<strong>in</strong>g to walk onwater!”I went to <strong>the</strong> seaside to what was called <strong>the</strong> corkscrew steps,climb<strong>in</strong>g down to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where <strong>the</strong> tide had come <strong>in</strong>. As Istood <strong>the</strong>re, I prayed, “Lord Jesus, you were displeased with Peter,but I’m go<strong>in</strong>g to please You. You said, ‘If you shall ask anyth<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> My name, I’ll give it.’ Now, my God, I ask You to makeme to walk on water.”I trotted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> water and sank. When I sank, I was so shockedand discouraged, I fell out with <strong>the</strong> Lord. I thought, “Here He is— He rebukes Peter because he took his eyes off Jesus, tell<strong>in</strong>g16
