They probably didn’t have a car. “Did youcome by bus?”“No,” <strong>the</strong> one expla<strong>in</strong>ed. “We swam four miles across <strong>the</strong> bay.”I asked <strong>the</strong>m what <strong>the</strong>y did for a liv<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong>y told me <strong>the</strong>ywere sponge divers.“That’s very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g,” I said. “Tell me about your work.”“Well, we have to dive deeply. We must hold our breath forabout two m<strong>in</strong>utes, cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sponges. We dive naked with arope around our middle and tie <strong>the</strong> sponges on <strong>the</strong> rope.This amazed me. “Is <strong>the</strong>re no danger deep down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water?”“Not really.”“Are <strong>the</strong>re no sharks?” I asked.“Oh yes,” <strong>the</strong>y said. “There are plenty of sharks.”“Well, don’t you consider that dangerous?”“Oh no,” <strong>the</strong>y said. “If <strong>the</strong> sharks come around follow<strong>in</strong>g ourrope, we just swim underneath <strong>the</strong>m and take our knife and justrip <strong>the</strong>m up.”213
