I thought I knew the voice of God and believed God had givenme the name and sex of the baby, but my assumptions were allwrong. I had to put my prophetic ministry on the shelf and havethe humbling truth that I wasn’t as far along as I thought I was,and I did not recognize the Voice. Many people never move from the place they are in, becausethey will not accept the truth of where they are. They cannotmove from that position until they do. I have to own where I amto be able to disown it.Such things die hard.My pride dies hardly. I’ve always had pride in the physical. Iplayed football ‘till I was 60. I jumped an iron fence at 66. WellI tried to. I’d always done it. And I cut an artery in my leg and itbled for four months. God has allowed me, physically, much grace.I was the visiting speaker in an Easter Convention in Manchesterin 1936. They thought that I would be spiritual and prayerful sothey almost apologized. They said, “On Easter Monday, the youngpeople go out and they have sports. Maybe you would like tostay at home and pray.”“No,” I said, “I’ll come along and watch your sports.” So I went. And when they had a 100-yard sprint, they said, “Are you comingto watch?” I said, “I’ll join in if you find me some shorts andcanvas shoes.” “Oh, well,” they didn’t expect the special preacherto do this! But I knew what I was doing. And in my ego and inmy pride, I knew and at the crack of the gun I was off! And I beatthe lot of them! Beat the lot of them! They said, “Oh, we neverdreamed that the preacher would come in first in the 100-yardsprint!”Well, I went bigheaded. I just took it. I knew I couldn’t do themarathon, 26 miles… but I could do the 100-yard sprint! And Ibeat the lot of them! And it filled my ego. It pleased me.Such like things die hard. You know that if you can do something, then you want to show it. Whether it’s driving, painting, cooking, mending, speaking, whatever, Wherever God has blessed me,I will respond by projecting myself.199
