— broken drains, damp basement — everything I hated. And so,that was that. One day Marj asked me, “Are you in arrears in yourlife with God?”Just before moving, I traveled to Jamaica where I went swimmingone beautiful day. The sea was a heavenly blue, and therewas nobody on the white sandy beach but me. As I swam in thatclear water, something stung me, and immediately my right legbecame paralyzed. I rolled over onto on my back, and kickingwith my left leg, made my way back to shore where I lay for halfan hour, paralyzed, until I thought the crisis was over. But it wasn’tover. The pain worsened and I knew I had been poisoned. Thenatives told me, if I had been bitten by a snake or stung by asquid or man-o-war, I would have nerve damage and it couldtake up to five years to get the poison out of my system.During our move to Wales, I still could not walk, except in greatpain. On the moving day, I jokingly said I was chairman of thisoperation because I could only sit in a chair. But it was far from ajoke. The continuous pain made my advent to Wales not a veryhappy time.God was dealing with me on the issue of my self-image. For themost part of 50 years, I had gone without doctors, hospitals, pills, or any other medical treatment. When I received Jesus asmy Saviour, I also received Him as my Healer. As much as I knewhow, I practiced what I believed and preached, and my dear wifeand I brought up our family of nine… mostly without medicalcare. When we were sick, we went to the Lord. I believe this waspleasing to God, but something began to grow in me. I had agrowth — not a tumor or anything like that — but a growth ofspiritual pride.Over the years, this developed in me until I became so anti-doctorand anti-medicine, I judged people who, even though theywere Pentecostal, didn’t live as I thought they ought to live. Ipreached from the story of Asa the King who had diseased feet.He did not seek the Lord but sought his physicians, and he diedat the age of 41. My attitude was “It serves him right! He shouldhave gone to the Lord.”189
