After two years, when I was ministering in a church in SouthEngland, a lady came up to me asking, “Do you remember me?”“No, I’m sorry, I don’t.”“I was with you in that tour through Israel,” she said. “After youspoke in tongues, I didn’t ever speak to you again, because I wasoffended. But when I came back to England, I searched the Scripturesand read what it said about tongues in the New Testament.The upshot of it all is that I received the Baptism of the HolySpirit along with my husband, and now we both speak in othertongues.”“My husband and I run a preparatory school for boys,” she added.“Do you see that gallery up there? Do you see those boys?” Shepointed to a group of 16 boys. “Almost every one of those boyshas been baptized in the Holy Spirit. I just thought you wouldlike to know.”Whenever I think of that incident on the shores of the Sea ofGalilee, I am grateful God eventually let me know the results ofmy obedience to Him.More incidents in IsraelOn another visit to Israel, our tour group had gone into a shopto buy cards and maps. After buying a few cards, I stood outsidethe shop waiting to board our bus. Four or five bearded Arabsapproached, who were selling crucifixes and rosaries and otherarticles. They began pestering me to buy something from them.“I don’t want any of those,” I insisted. “I don’t even believe inthem. If I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t buy them.Do you understand that? I don’t believe in those things.” I beganto move away from them and they followed me, surroundingme. I walked on, hoping they would give up and try selling theirwares to someone else.I continued walking and they continued following me until Ireached a blind alley and could walk no farther. Menacingly, thosestreet merchants surrounded me, and I wondered if they meantto stone me. I had already had an experience like this in Galilee,where two men had tried to get money from me. I didn’t haveany money on me at the time, so those men had turned, as if to180
leave, and then had begun pelting me with stones. I was rememberingthat incident when the Spirit of the Lord came on me. …Iclosed my eyes and cried out a message in tongues. When I openedmy eyes, the men had gone.I returned to the shop and boarding the bus with the others, I satdown. Then a big bearded man got on and tried to peddle hisrosaries and trinkets to the passengers. He walked down the aisle,until he came to me and stopped abruptly. Pointing his finger atme, he said, “I know you, Arthur Burt.”The bus driver shouted to him that the bus was leaving, and thebearded man jumped off the bus and was gone. There was noway possible for him to know my name, but he did know it. Itreminded me of the girl in the Book of Acts who said, “Thesemen show unto us the way of salvation.” Paul was grieved becauseshe had a divining spirit. My only explanation for the man’sknowledge of my name was that he knew it by a supernaturalevil power.People in the world don’t read the Bible,but they do read us.In relating those two incidents involving tongues, I don’t meanto glorify tongues, but God forbid I should limit His power. Theproblem with many Pentecostal people is they have majored ontongues and the other gifts of the Holy Spirit and have not putthe emphasis on the fruit of the Spirit. The Bible says if I do this, Iam only a tinkling cymbal.We Pentecostals have encouraged what we call the filling of theSpirit, without first teaching people to surrender unconditionallyto the Lord, and afterward, to seek to be baptized in His Spirit.Many weak, ineffective Christians can spout off a few words intongues, but one cannot compare their lives with the fruitful livesof other Christians who have never once spoken in an unknowntongue.Did old General Booth speak with other tongues? Did the Wesley’s,Martin Luther, Finney, Moody, Torry, Alexander, William Careyor Hudson Taylor? Many believe tongues to be the evidence ofbeing baptized in the Holy Spirit, but the ability to speak in tonguesis by no means the gauge of a man’s ministry. It would be incred-181
