And then theydie in a wilderness of unbelief. We may blame the devil, ourwives, our circumstances, but until we take the blame for ourown failure, we will never get anywhere with God.In Numbers 22, Balaam beat the ass for stopping instead of findingout why the ass had stopped. Don’t beat the ass. See that thevery ass you blame for your difficulty is your salvation, as theangel said, “Surely, Balaam, I would have slain you if the asshadn’t seen me and stopped.”Tears are not necessarily a sign of true repentance. They can be,instead, the pouring out of self-pity. Esau sought his lost birthrightwith tears but did not find it. Thank God that He is a graciousGod who can give us back again wasted years, but He willnot do it until we admit that we have wasted the years.The fish pondOne day, Mrs. Greening, a sister who owned a large house inMaidstone, approached me. Looking me in the eyes, hesaid, “Daddy, you don’t mean what you say.”“What do you mean, Andrew?”“You keep saying, ‘I’ll make you a fish pond,’ but your wordsdon’t mean what they say,” he declared. The Holy Spirit drovethose words into my heart as he spoke and I felt as convicted asif I needed saving. At once, the main priority in life became makingmy little boy a fish pond.I asked Jack Perkins to help me, and together we dug out a holeand constructed Andrew’s pond. When my son rebuked me fornot fulfilling my promise, I saw there is nothing as powerful asGod’s Word which binds even Him.God “…cannot deny Himself.” (II Tim 2:13) And it almost seemsas if we can tie God with His Word. I see Moses standing in thepresence of God, and when God declares He would destroy Israel,Moses tells Him, “You can’t do this!” How can a man tellthe Almighty what He can and can’t do? Moses prevailed becausehe stood on God’s previous promise concerning Israel.147
