Introducti<strong>on</strong><strong>The</strong> first cemetery in Engl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was opened in Norwich in 1819.At the beginning of the 19th century, burying the dead was theresp<strong>on</strong>sibility of the Church of Engl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> with n<strong>on</strong>-c<strong>on</strong>formistministers being forbidden to c<strong>on</strong>duct funerals in the parishchurchyard. While n<strong>on</strong>-c<strong>on</strong>formist communities had been ableto found their own burial grounds since the l<strong>at</strong>er 17th century,there were few of these.In Worcestershire <strong>on</strong>e of the earliest cemeteries to be openedwas Tallow Hill (1823). <strong>The</strong>re are also a number of records forn<strong>on</strong>-c<strong>on</strong>formist cemeteries including Brailes, Evesham <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>Worcester Society of Friends Burial Grounds.Modern day interest in crem<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> started in the 1870s. <strong>The</strong> firstofficial crem<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> took place <strong>at</strong> Woking in 1885, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the firstmunicipal crem<strong>at</strong>orium opened in Hull in 1901. <strong>The</strong>Worcestershire Archive <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Archaeology Service holdsregisters of crem<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>at</strong> Worcester from 1960-1988.Inform<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> provided by <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cemetery</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Records</str<strong>on</strong>g> Grave number D<strong>at</strong>e of burial Name Rank/Professi<strong>on</strong> Street/Parish Age
