LateWorks 1950–1954 the HaywardTour<strong>in</strong>g Exhibition will open at TheAtk<strong>in</strong>son next February.The French pa<strong>in</strong>ter, sculptor anddesigner, Henri Matisse (1869–1954)was one of the 20th century’s most<strong>in</strong>fluential artists. His vibrant worksare celebrated for their extraord<strong>in</strong>aryrichness and lum<strong>in</strong>osity of colour.Matisse: Draw<strong>in</strong>g with Scissors, fromthe Southbank Centre, Londonfeatures 35 lithographic pr<strong>in</strong>ts of thefamous cut–outs, produced <strong>in</strong> the lastfour years of his life, when the artistwas conf<strong>in</strong>ed to his bed. It <strong>in</strong>cludesmany of his iconic images, such as TheSnail and the Blue Nudes.Matisse cont<strong>in</strong>ued creat<strong>in</strong>g highlyorig<strong>in</strong>al works <strong>in</strong>to his eighties. I drawstraight <strong>in</strong>to the colour.” The coloursPantomime full of fun and surprisesReview byTom Mart<strong>in</strong>• Jack and The Beanstalk• Southport TheatreIT doesn’t feel like Christmaswithout a panto and SouthportTheatre and Convention Centreprovides a spectacular show full offun and surprises.Jack and the Beanstalk is orig<strong>in</strong>aland refresh<strong>in</strong>g to watch but alsomanages to throw <strong>in</strong> every lovedpantomime cliché along the way.The classic tale will delightaudiences of all ages, with brilliantsongs and dances for the children –and even some mature jokes for theparents!There is also a wonderful cast andSOUTHPORT Operatic NewGeneration (SONG) have beens<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with joy after theyperformed songs from their newproduction of Joseph at theAtk<strong>in</strong>son on Sunday (December 1)<strong>in</strong> their big Open Weekend.They secured the rights to the fullWest End version of the AmateurYouth Production of Joseph and theAmaz<strong>in</strong>g Technicolour Dreamcoat.Former SONG member AlistairLee, whose own professional stagedebut was as one of the brothers <strong>in</strong>the UK Tour of Joseph, came to seehe used were so strong that he wasadvised by his doctor to wear darkglasses.The lithographic reproductions <strong>in</strong>this exhibition are taken from aspecial double issue of Verve, a reviewof art and literature, published byTériade, a major publisher of f<strong>in</strong>e artbooks <strong>in</strong> 1958.Jane Brown, The Atk<strong>in</strong>son’sMuseum and Gallery officer said: “Itis excit<strong>in</strong>g to be able to br<strong>in</strong>g such ashigh quality exhibition from one ofthe world’s most famous artists to theAtk<strong>in</strong>son.”Matisse began his work<strong>in</strong>g life as alawyer, before go<strong>in</strong>g to Paris to studyart <strong>in</strong> 1890. At first strongly<strong>in</strong>fluenced by the Impressionists, hesoon created his own style, us<strong>in</strong>gbrilliant, pure colours, and startedmak<strong>in</strong>g sculptures as well aspa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs. In 1905 he and hiscolleagues were branded the Fauves(wild beasts) because of theirunconventional use of colour, and itwas dur<strong>in</strong>g this time that he pa<strong>in</strong>tedhis celebrated Luxe, Calme et Volupté(Luxury, Tranquillity and Delight).Runn<strong>in</strong>g alongside the exhibitionwill be Draw<strong>in</strong>g with ScissorsLee Latchford–Evans, who was amember of the band Steps, playedthe character of Jack and was thestar of the show.He seemed to love his role of thehero and had the audience on theedge of their seat with an all actionperformance.But it wouldn’t be a panto withouta villa<strong>in</strong>, and the giant’s henchmanis a perfect fit for children to ‘boo’!It also features popular andcurrent songs from the likes of OneDirection and Beyonce to give thepanto a modern feel.However, it doesn’t forget its rootsand there are plenty of references tothe orig<strong>in</strong>s of the tale.Jack, along with his Mum andbrother Billy, are down on their luckand desperately need money to paytheir rent.the group rehears<strong>in</strong>g ahead of theirAtk<strong>in</strong>son performance.And this isn’t the only bit of goodnews for SONG, as they have beennom<strong>in</strong>ated for eight awards at theNational Operatic and DramaticAssociation North West Awards onSaturday, January 11 at theRamada Hotel <strong>in</strong> Southport. Therecognition is for their lastproduction, Godspell. They havebeen nom<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>gcategories: best lead<strong>in</strong>g male andfemale actors, best choreographer<strong>in</strong> a youth musical, and best musicalyouth production.L<strong>in</strong>da Davies, secretary for SONGsaid: “We were delighted to haveHenri Matisse – Blue Nude II. ArtsCouncil Collection DACSworkshop on Monday, February 17between 11am–2pm. The familyfriendly workshop <strong>in</strong>spired by theexhibition uses Henri Matisse’stechnique of collage and cut–outs tocreate small pieces for children to takehome, as well as produc<strong>in</strong>g a hugepiece of art for the gallery.The Matisse: Draw<strong>in</strong>g with Scissors.Late Works 1950–1954 is runn<strong>in</strong>gfrom February 15 until March 16 .
