The Champion • Wednesday 18 December 2013Six menarrestedover cashmachineraidsReport by Holly RummensSIX men have been arrested in connectionwith the attempted burglary at Birkdale’sSantander Bank on Liverpool Road in Mayalong with several others across the region.The six men aged between 27 and 39, havebeen arrested for attempted burglary oncash machines and causing explosions, aftera number of warrants were executed at fiveaddresses in Liverpool.The arrests have come after an extensiveinvestigation by the specialist Matrix team,working together with the West MidlandsRegional and Organised Crime Unit and theNorth West Regional Organised Crime Unit(TITAN), into offenders targeting cashmachines.Detective Superintendent Chris Green,said: “The arrests are the culmination of athorough and complex investigation intocrimes involving thefts of and thefts fromcash point machines in North West andCentral England.“We have used all the resources availableto us, including technology and forensics, aspart of our investigation and I would like tosend a message out to those who committhese types of crime and think they can getaway with it.“Police forces will work together and willdo everything in their power to identifythose responsible.“Offenders may believe that by committingcrimes in different force areas that they canescape arrest, but forces do work togetherregardless of boundaries to bring people tojustice.He added: ”Some of the techniques used byoffenders in these crimes are extremelydangerous and we are fortunate that no–onehas been hurt. He spent the first three years as a Cadet,then as an adult in 1952 until 1956 when hejoined The Royal Corps of Signals.Brian served for 22 years following hisNational Service and returned to SouthportDivision on his discharge in 1979.Viv Rathbone, divisional superintendent forSouthport St John Ambulance, said: “In 2000his exemplary service was recognised by thePriory of St John and he was invested as aServing Brother of the Most Venerable Order ofthe hospital of St John of Jerusalem.“It is one of the highest honours available inthe service.“In 2007 he took a step back and beganfundraising in the Division, spending manyhours counting thousands of pennies collectedat events and designated collection days.“Even up until his final days when he was ill,Brian was still raising money – that’s just thekind of person he was.“He gave more than 15,500 voluntary hoursof service to St John Ambulance and will begreatly missed by all who knew him. ”Oursympathy and prayers go to his family.“The scene of the assault which is believed to be racially aggrevatedPolish man, 28,seriously injuredin stab attackReport by Ollie CowanSOUTHPORT’S Polish community is in shockafter a 28–year–old Polish man was stabbedand seriously injured in what police havedescribed as a ‘vicious and seeminglyunprovoked’ attack.The victim was found in a serious condition inthe early hours of Wednesday morning(December 11) after being stabbed and is nowin a serious but stable condition say police.A 19–year–old man, Thomas Rigby, of ForestRoad, Southport, has been charged with aSection 18 assault (wounding) after appearingat South Sefton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.A 34–year–old Southport man who had beenarrested on suspicion of attempted murder hasbeen questioned and released on police bailpending further enquiries.Two other men, also from the local area, havebeen arrested on suspicion of assisting theoffender before also being given police bail.A member of the public called the emergencyservices at around 5.50am on Wednesdaymorning to report that a man was collapsed ata bus stop on Lord Street.Officers attended and found the man, who is aPolish national, with severe stab wounds.
