from Rev. Stephen GrayMy final letter! One Dominican Preacher said “If the only Prayer you make isThank you, that is enough”“Eucharist” basically means “Thanksgiving” and so it is withheavy heart but with much Thanksgiving that we depart thiswonderful community of Graffham. A big Thank you to somany who have made our time here so rich and welcomingand for making the various expressions of ministry so joyful. There have inevitably been terribly sad occasions where therole of Pastor and Priest has been imperative to minister, butalso there have been many times of praise and jubilation thathave wrought an abundance of joy and happiness which wewill foster for years to come. There are so many things we willmiss, not least of all the views! And Dudley my goldenLabrador of 15 who is buried in the Rectory Garden. (Whatwould I do without my Church Wardens who even dug an 8foot hole one Sunday morning for his resting place?!) But it’sthe people that make up a place and on you we will reflectwith affection, love and thanksgiving.Paul writes a warm letter to the Philippian Church whoopened their hearts and homes and were receptive to hismessage with these simple words: “I hold you in my heart.”And so before I sign off for the final time, on behalf of Fiona,Lucy, Amy and Millie, a HUGE thank you for your reception tous and we will forever hold you in our hearts.2

Thursday ClubRoundup of ActivitiesThe outing towards the end of May to Brighton Pavilion was asuccess, an almost full coach of passengers travelling to thesouth coast with the sun shining from a blue sky despite thecold wind. We were greeted by a well-versed guide whoknew her facts and figures and lead a very interesting anddetailed tour of this most unusual building. There was time after lunch to fit in a brief visit to the BrightonMuseum, housed in enormous premises adjacent to thePavilion, which once provided the most lavish stables for theroyal visitors, entourage and guests. On Thursday 13th June we all enjoyed a very entertaining talkby Gordon Stevenson, Chairman of the Petworth CottageMuseum. He indicated that he would be pleased to comeback in the future and speak on a different topic.Strawberry TeaWe will meet on Thursday 11th July at 2.30pm for ourtraditional Strawberry Tea which will include a bring-and-buysale and will take place in the Bowls Pavilion.Diana White & Sylvia Smithfrom Jean PageJean would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts andprayers, and to say a special thank you to all those who haveso generously taken her to hospital appointments inPortsmouth. Jean has been convalescing in Dorset buthopes to be back with us in Graffham soon.7

Sussex Wildlife TrustPots, plastic spoons and new arrivalsFirstly I must say it was nice to see so many Graffhamchildren (and associated parents and grandparents) on mybug hunt on the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s heathland reserveat Iping Common a few weeks back. The weather wasterrible – it poured down! (although it didn’t seem wetenough for some children who splashed in every availablepuddle). I armed the children with pots and plastic spoonsand sent them out around the heath to gather anything thatwriggled or scuttled past. Despite the weather we stillmanaged a good haul of snails, spiders, caterpillars, bugsand beetles – including some impressive violet groundbeetles. Thanks to everyone who came along - I’llcertainly plan some more bug hunts closer to home at ourGraffham Common reserve in the future. We've received a lot of positive feedback from people whohave visited the recently restored 'Graffham CommonWest' reserve. Local Sussex Wildlife Trust memberGraham Ault has been appointed as the Volunteer ReserveManager for Graffham Common and will be assisting uswith events here in the future. I popped over this week foranother walk around the reserve with Jane Willmott andothers. Despite the restoration work only being finished afew months ago we are already seeing some interestingwildlife returning to the site.I discovered the eggs of the emperor moth – one of ourlargest and most impressive moths – on the leaves ofsome young heather growing up from the sandy soil.Graeme Lyons, our ecologist, was amazed to hear a treepipit calling as it flew around the site. This tiny bird, whichmigrates to England from its wintering grounds south ofGuinea and Ethiopia, loves our heathlands and can be8

heard singing from lone trees. We’re hoping that tree pipitswill colonise this site in future years and we can beserenaded by their beautiful display call as we walk aroundthe reserve. The most remarkable find was a pearlborderedfritillary butterfly. This is one of the county’s rarestspecies and only known from a handful of sites inSussex. The nearest known colonies of this butterfly areover 7 miles away. Where had this lone wanderer comefrom? It’s the first time this butterfly has been seen in theparish in many decades. It’s certainly exciting to monitorthe reserve as wildlife starts to return – I’ll keep youupdated with future arrivals.Michael BlencoweSussex Wildlife Trust.michaelblencowe@sussexwt.org.uk07827 830891Looking for clues? You might find themin the Empire HallOn 28th September9

Farewell to Our RectorSteve Gray has been our Rector, and Chaplain at Seaford Collegefor the last 3 years and we are very sorry to see him and Fiona andtheir three daughters Lucy, Amy and Millie leave us. He isappointed the Senior Chaplain to Bradfield College in Berkshire. In the very short time he has been with us Steve has reached intoso many corners of our community. During term time his emphasishas been with Seaford where "the Rev" is popular with staff andpupils alike. A full time job one might think, but he always makestime for his parishioners in need and he has rarely missed aservice. He is a people person so easily able to identify with youngand old alike; those who come to church and those who might; andthose who will never come to church but who are every bit as mucha member of our community. Is that not the essence of a goodparson, one whose personal conviction and spirituality shines outbut who is available to all as a teacher or just as a friend. That hasbeen our very fortunate experience with our Rector.Sport has been his life long passion as he so eloquently explainedat the last Men's Breakfast at the White Horse. Now there is atradition he has started which we must strive to maintain! Anotherinstitution has been his Seaford v Graffham hockey on Boxing Day.I am sure Seaford will miss his coaching prowess and Graffham willcertainly miss his batting. He has run marathons to raise money forcharity and the sporting tales could go on. Our loss is Bradfield'sgain. Both Fiona and Steve have a deep interest in Africa and Steve hasset up two charitable links, one between Seaford and a school inRwanda and the other between our parish and the Diocese of Buyein Burundi where we support a theological college, a school and anHIV/AIDS clinic. I am sure he would wish that these projects to helpthose in need in Africa might continue. His congregation in St Giles has grown under his leadership and StGiles is packed at festival times; surely a considerable tribute to ourRector. He preaches in that impressive style without notes from thebody of the church and yet he recalls quotes a-plenty andseemingly with ease and his message is clear yet profound. Henever preaches for too long. I am in awe! Ably supported by hischurch wardens and our organist Richard Bailey, not to mention ahost of others, St Giles maintains a focal place in our community12

and Steve has made his special mark in the spiritual life ofGraffham.Of course, "behind every great man.....". Steve and Fiona havebeen a great team who have both integrated so easily into thevillage. They have thrown their house open readily for numerouslunches and many social occasions. Fiona's contribution to thephotographic record of our beautiful Sussex scenery has been sobeneficial to the church and all of us through card sales and the like.We shall miss them both and the girls and our very best wishes gowith them to Bradfield.Steve's last service in St Giles is on 14 July. I am sure many willwant to attend. We shall hold a farewell party immediately followingthe service with some wine and small eats. Do join us.Alan GordonGraffham PCCBelow - Steve & Fiona with Amy, Lucy & Millie - Trinity Sunday 201313

Graffham Village Shop AssociationThe construction of the new premises for Stephanie, the pictureframer, is proceeding well although the carpenters have beenhampered by inclement weather. We expect to make the buildingwatertight by the end of June and can then complete the interior. The original building specification was modified to overcomeunforeseen former works on site, resulting in a building onecourse of bricks higher than planned. This would have resultedin the mandatory disabled access ramp spreading further thanwe would have wished. After discussion with the BuildingInspector we were allowed to reduce the specification of theinternal floor and lower the building by two brick coursesresulting in a far more aesthetically pleasing construction, together with time and cost savings. We now have a firm offer of funding from Barclays Bank for thenext stage of the development and are in the process of fulfillingthe requisite preconditions and would hope to start Phase II, theextension of the shop and the creation of the new residentialspace, during the course of the summer. Our thanks again to those members of the village who havegenerously contributed to this development and made a startpossible: we trust you are pleased with the development thus far.James WoodsChairmanGVSA AGMMonday 29 July, 6.00pmAt Graffham School18

Graffham Tennis ClubThe Tennis ReportAndrew Major put some disappointing performances from last yearbehind him with three awesome displays in the Red Group of theMen’s A Singles. Young Finn Cowcher making his debut in this eventwas first put to the sword, as Andrew swept to a 6-2,6-3 victory. Finn,a notorious slow starter, could not quite get into the match, but he cantake plenty of credit from this showing, and is sure to learn from theexperience.Andrew followed up with another straight sets victory over a gallantGuy Lamming. Guy was off to a fast start and held a 3-0 lead beforeAndy took control with some brilliant all round tennis to gain a 6-4, 6-2triumph! It was something of an unlucky weekend for Guy who, theprevious day, had played some superb tennis to take the first set 6-0against Club number1 and title holder Andy Craig. Guy was wellthere in the second set at 4-4, but the relentless consistency of thetop seed once again wore down the opposition as Andy edged thatset 6-4 and took the decider 6-2.Even better was to come from Andrew Major as his hat-trick ofstraight set victories was completed at the expense of his nemesisAndy Craig, whom he was beating for the first time. Introducing amuch greater degree of consistency into his game Andrew was morethan able to match the title holder in some punishing rallies. Thematch ended on such a note with Andrew gaining the vital point aftera seemingly endless exchange! The 6-3,7-5, victory was a wellexecuted tactical success, and Andrew booked his place in thesemi’s. It will be no surprise to see these two oppose again in thefinal, although Finn Cowcher may have a say if he can win hisremaining two matches against Andy Craig and Guy Lamming? In the Blue Group last years runner-up Andy Cook coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Julian Poole. Julian back after a wrist operation lookedrusty, but did show glimpses of his old form, and will improve for theouting.Further highlights of the early encounters brought about a polishedperformance from young Ailsa Green to defeat a ring rusty but gallantLucie Challen 6-2,6-4, in the Ladies Singles. Ailsa’s great potentialwill be put to the test in the next round when she meets the winner ofthe match between 4th seed Anna Moore and Olivia Lamming. Also28

in this event 3rd seed Emma Amin cruised to a 6-1,6-2 victory over JoCrow.Crack junior Oliver Sanders had a successful debut in the Men’s BSingles when he defeated the likeable and gallant Jack Benham 6-1, 6-3. Oliver’s great potential will also be put to the test with a likely matchagainst 4th seed Leo Montgomery. Brett Creed gave a good showingin defeating Elliott Thornley 6-1,7-6, and hopes for more successagainst 3rd seed Beetle Clay.In the Men’s B Doubles Elliott Thornley and Simon Kirke progressedwith a 6-4,6-3 win over Will Clack and Leo Montgomery, and Brett andThomas Creed beat Jack Benham and George Limpus 6-3,6-3.In the Mixed Doubles second seeds Finn Cowcher and Polly Lammingreached the quarter finals when defeating Harry and Lucie Challen 6-2,6-3. In the fun section of the draw Oliver and Philippa Sanders beatJosef and Emma Amin 6-3,6-4. And Steve and Gabriella Watson beatPeter and Sabrina Bradley 6-1,6-3. Sabrina at 8 years young is ourmost junior competitor, and looks a tennis star in the making! There was a really good clash in the Boys’ Singles when GeorgePettifer narrowly defeated Charlie Gyles 6-3,7-5. George showed greatresolution and consistency with his ground shots, whilst Charlie isdeveloping plenty of style into his game, and in a few years may have aserve to envy! There were also wins for Jacob Thornley over SebLimpus, and Kofi Atkinson over Jamie Thornley. In the Girls’ Singles the two Holly’s, Gyles and Benham, produced anexcellent match with Holly B performing well on her tournament debut, although it was Holly G who was the 7-5,6-2 victor. Trophy holder AilsaGreen defeated Molly Clay 6-1,6-2, and second seed Isobel Woodswas a straight sets victor over Cressida Lamming. In the East Hants League Division 3 the Ladies A team had tworesounding away victories, 8-0 at Denmead and 6-2 at Haslemere, butthen suffered a narrow 5-3 defeat home to Midhurst A. Midhurst wereled by wily veteran Claire Powell who with daughter Victoria won allfour of their rubbers. Our number ones Kate Hogan and Emma Aminwill have better days, although a late rally almost secured us a draw.Luckily Sian Green and Angie Thornley were in great form late onwhich kept the result respectable. This league is wide open and with 4home matches coming up we are still very much in the running! OurMixed team suffered a 6-2 reversal against a strong Fernhurst side.Mike Dimmer29

Lavington Park FederationGraffham Infant & Duncton CE Junior SchoolsWith the end of the academic year looming, the children have enjoyeda busy few weeks. We were lucky enough to have a dry afternoon sothat the Federation could come together for our annual sports day.The children participated in a range of non-competitive and competitiveactivities ranging from obstacle courses, running and javelin. Thankyou to those parents who were brave enough to compete with our YearSix children in a most complicated hoop challenge! Well done to HazelTeam who were the overall winners of the day. I’d like to take thisopportunity to thank Ali Fentimen (one of our junior teachers and PEco-ordinator) for planning this hugely successful day.We have continued to develop our outside learning areas at both sites.A large, 3D grass dragon has taken up residence at Graffham whichthe children are thoroughly enjoying playing on and around. This waslargely constructed by volunteers, especially Petworth CommunityGarden workers. The head was sculpted by members of the ClockTrust. Fruit trees have been planted at both sites; these were kindlydonated by The Lions Group. Thank you to all those involved withboth projects.School trips have been relished by all across the Federation.Woodpecker class enjoyed a day at a Model Farm, Cowdray. Thechildren experienced what life is like on a working farm and had theopportunity to feed lambs, chickens and pigs. Peregrines (Year Six)enjoyed a day at the Houses of Parliament, learning about howGovernment works, watching a debate and interviewing Nick Herbert. They also enjoyed a soggy day at The South of England Show atArdingly. Nursery and the Infants enjoyed a sunny day learning abouthabitats and creatures at Arundel’s Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.Pond dipping and chick spotting were the highlights of the day. Zoolabalso visited the School, bringing with them some creatures from therainforest. Staff and pupils were very brave and had the opportunity tohandle stick insects, snakes and cockroaches! We were fascinated bythe tarantula but decided it was safer for him to stay in his box!We still have so much to look forward to in the last few weeks of term;summer camps, productions and Bikeability to name but a few.Kind RegardsHelen Martin and Jenny Sturt30

Oil Buying ConsortiumAs a recent convert to an excellent oil buying consortium I thoughtthat others might be interested. This consortium goes out to the market each week asking for a bulkprice which is then emailed to subscribers who, if they need a fill-up,then contact the nominated supplier and place an order. There is noobligation to make a puchase.Per litre prices for the last 3 weeks have been 56.49, 54.40. 54.40excluding VAT.I have saved £100 and £60 on my two most recent fill-ups(compared to my contracted supplier Pace Petroleum. If you wish to register with the consortium emailDerekBradnum@aol.com putting the word oil in the subject line.He will respond with a list of explicit and easy to follow rules. There is an annual £10 fee for membership to cover expenses. There is a system for non-emailers which you can access by callingDerek on 01403 891 181.Martin BuckleyAccommodation!Small flat with own entrance.Bedsit, kitchen and bathroom in thecountry between Duncton and Graffhamfor a single person.01798 867 495 (evenings)33
