We got slammed! Sandy blew into town with a vengeance! Residents stayed as long aspossible preparing for what turned out to be a monster storm but when the evacuation order came, most people left. When the storm was over and people were streaming back, cars were not allowedonto the Point because of the number of trees, branches and wires down in the streets. A massiveclean-up ensued with neighbors helping neighbors, sharing food and lanterns until the power cameback. The clean-up went on for days as many residents lost cars, appliances, furniture, boats andsustained structural damage. It could have been worse, but it was bad enough!

Katys KitchenAs it came time to write myfirst column for summer 2013, Iwas thinking about my dad whopassed away last Septemberfrom lung cancer at the youngage of 77. My dad loved goodfood, a good extra dry vodkamartini and most of all, icecream. Ice cream was such apassion of his; we served it athis funeral.Ice cream is not just adessert in my family; it is considereda major food group.Last summer I spent manyhours driving my dad aroundthe North Shore of Massachusettsseeking out all thesmall homemade ice creamstands. Some days he was tooweak to get out of the car buthe would send me up to thecounter to bring him back adouble scoop of frozen deliciousness. One of his favoriteice cream spots was MysticDrawbridge… chocolate icecream with chocolate chunks, rippled with fudge sauce andchopped up Butterfinger candybars. Here is to honoring youdad!Enjoy making ice creammemories with your family.“I scream, you scream, we allscream for ice cream!”Ice Cream BombeServes 16Ingredients:1 large metal bowl (13”diame-with Katy Reedter or more)Spray Pam2 boxes of Yodels or Ho Hoʼs2 gallons of ice cream- 2 differentflavors- softened1 jar of hot fudge sauce1 jar of caramel sauce1 package of crushed OreosDirections:Slice Yodels in thin circles- youwill get 5/Yodel.Spray the metal bowl with Pam.Line the bowl with the Yodelslices in a circular style until thebowl is completely lined up tothe top. If using a largerbowl you will need to doublethe quantity of ice cream. To serve, place metal bowl insink filled with about 2” of hotwater. Swirl the bowl in thewater for 1-2 minutes. Placelarge platter over bowl andinvert. Voila…Ice CreamBombe! Warm the knife underhot water to help with slicing.Ed. note I have had this atKatyʼs many times!Unbelievably delicious!GRAPE NOTESby John LombardoThe winter of 1829 – 1830was particularly harsh inGermany. Some grape growershad the idea to leave somegrapes on the vines after theharvest so they could be usedfor animal fodder. When it wasnoticed that the frozen grapesbecame very sweet, they wereharvested, pressed, and a verysweet dessert wine was crafted. The sugars and othersolids do not freeze on thevine, but the water content inthe grapes does. So, whenpressed, the ice crystals arediscarded and a very concentrated, sweet wine emergesfrom the vinification. InGermany these wines arecalled Eiswein; elsewhere theyare called ice wines.Riesling is the traditionalgrape varietal for ice wines. InNorth America the Vidal grapeis also popular. Ice wine productionis limited to the smallnumber of winemaking regionswhere the winter temperaturesregularly are sub-freezing.Germany and Canada are theleading producers.Ice winemaking is a riskyproposition. The frost maynever come. The grapes mayrot before the weather becomescold enough. And a sufficientlabor force must be available toharvest the grapes on veryshort notice. Not surprisingly, ice wines are more expensiveGLP NEWS Page 4than traditional table wines. Icewines are typically sold in halfbottles. Because of their richnessand sweetness, a littlegoes a long way. A single halfbottle can easily serve six people. These wines should beserved slightly chilled. In a true ice wine the veryripe grapes are frozen on thevine. Alternatively, very ripegrapes can be harvested, thenfrozen. A method called cryoextractionis then used to separatethe ice crystals and fermentationthen takes place.Wines made in this manner aretypically called icebox winesand are a less expensive alternativeto ice wines.Despite the sweetness, anice wine is quite refreshing dueto its bracing acidity. Ice winesare full-bodied, rich, and havevery persistent aftertastes.Peach, pear, and apricot aretypical aromas and flavors.Tropical fruits such as mangoand pineapple are also commonaromatic features of icewines.Ice wines are a dessert bythemselves. Iʼm not aware ofany wine that goes well with icecream. The dessert is toosweet and too cold to accompanya dessert wine. So, let mesuggest a glass of ice winebefore or after you tuck intothat ice cream.935 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, CT 06492203 265 - 1206 GLP 203 623 - 4994Peter Joyce ctpowerandsport.comSUZUKI - YAMAHA - JOHN DEERE - HONDA - SEADOOMotorcycles ATVʼs Snowmobiles Power Equipment Jet Boats PWCʼsLANDSCAPES, LAWN CARE & TREE CARE860.235.0752WWW.SPRIGSANDTWIGS.NETAN ALL ORGANIC COMPANYStewards Of The EnvironmentCT HIC #0577341CT Arborist Lic. #S-5902

Gardening On The Edgewith Heather LaidlawRepairI spent this winter with apile of third-rate masonʼs soil inmy front yard, carting it little bylittle between thaws to theexcavated pit that was my originalvegetable plot. Back andforth, I plodded past exposedasparagus crowns, bare garlicclinging for dear life, fragmentsof East Dock and a dashedcold frame, all the while tellingmyself that this was the lasttime I would replace the soil, that the next time everythinggoes “whoosh!” Iʼll leave it andplant a rock garden.Sandy took my chunk ofearth, left my family un-earthed,exiled to our safe church on ahill. In the way that nature andemotion twine around eachother, Sandy marked a psychicstorm, a deliberate fight andflight reaction akin to the onethat brought me here twelveyears ago. Wind, fire, brokenglass. In brief, I lost more thandirt. One displaced can be replaced, but can one dis-peopledbe re-peopled? In bothcases, I gained more than lesserdirt, that which clings andrepairs when the surface hasbeen stripped away.their Spring break. GoodFriday found neighbors andnephews shoveling, wheelbarrowing, and leveling the newdirt—more than had ever beenthere before—a huge, dense, anemic grave. The last of thebrush and debris was raked up.The asparagus patch was dustedwith some gifted compost. The asparagus came back.Radishes, bush beans, andsunflowers keep popping theirway through the crusty soil, loosening and conditioning asthey grow. Lime green, winecolored, and dappled lettucerosettes start to carpet the borders. The patched-up coldframe hosts a squash that willsoon outgrow it. The stonewalls are mended, and EastDock rebuilt. It is June, therugosa scents the air, andeverything is green-green andsparkling with bright flowersand the ever-hopeful humanspirit.UNEARTHEDDONʼT FORGET!HELLO SUMMERCOCKTAIL PARTYSaturday, July 66:30 to 8:30Clark HallPlease bring anhors dʼoeuvre!GLP NEWS Page 6DONʼT FORGET!GLPAssociationAnnual MeetingSaturday, July 69 amClark HallSNOW DAYS!The snowstormnamed NEMO!When did they startnaming snowstorms?Sure waspretty but caused alot of problems!Last December Patrick Bradyran in the New Hampshire“Santa Shuffle.” The racewas a 5k and Santa Bradyacquitted himself admirably! The cousins came up onMIDWAYPIZZA33 Fort Hill Rd.Groton, CT 06340We Deliver860 445-7314Wings, chicken, burgers,Mozzarella sticks, fries!Ancient history!
