Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary TimeA pendant in the shape of a cross is one of the most popular forms ofjewelry. Women and men alike often wear one hanging from a gold orsilver chain around their necks. Children often receive one when theymake their first Communion. For some people, putting on the cross eachday is an intensely religious experience. For others, the gold or silveremblem that they wear possesses nothing more than some sentimentalvalue. For some, it serves only to make a fashion statement. Diamondsare popular, but it is probably fair to say that a cross is far moreprevalent.Writing in the second half of the first century, it is unlikely that theGospel writers would foresee the boon that Christianity gave to moderndaygoldsmiths. For Luke, taking up the cross daily did not meanfastening a piece of jewelry around his neck. He lived in a time when itwas clear that being a Christian meant living a very different way of life.It meant getting up before dawn on the first day of the week to hasten tothe early morning gathering for the breaking of the bread. Sunday was aday of work like any other. It meant contributing to the welfare of othersinstead of looking out only for oneself. And it meant being prepared toface persecution because one's faith was not consistent with thecommonly held opinions of the day.The Christian values of Sunday prayer, charity toward others, and astrong faith in God have not changed. They are still things that thefollowers of Jesus cling to as important aspects of the faith. As anydisciple would admit, taking up the cross is not about wearing a piece ofmetal dangling from a chain. Amulets like that can be a reminder of theinterior life one hopes to espouse, but they do not guarantee salvation.Only losing our life in Christ will lead to that.MONDAY, June 217:00 pm Blue Army ~ Chapel7:00 pm Religious Formation ~ Conference RoomTUESDAY, June 229:15 am —6:30 pm Eucharistic Adoration ~ Chapel1:00 pm Prayer/Vocations ~ Chapel6:00 pm Divine Mercy Chaplet ~ ChapelWEDNESDAY, June 23FESTIVAL ~ 6:00—11:00 p.m. ~ Wristband NightTHURSDAY, June 24FESTIVAL ~ 6:00—11:00 p.m. ~ Wristband NightFRIDAY, June 25FESTIVAL ~ 6:00 p.m. —MidnightSATURDAY, June 26FESTIVAL ~ 2:00 p.m.—MidnightWristbands 2:00—6:00 p.m.SUNDAY, June 27FESTIVAL ~ 2:00— 10:00 p.m.Wristbands 2:00 —10:00 p.m.St. The Pastor’s PageRECHARGING THE OL’ SPIRITUAL BATTERIESWe all know how important it is to get our rest, to makesure that we are rejuvenated. That is not only important in terms of our physical andemotional states of being, it is also important for our spirituallife. The best way to be rejuvenated spiritually is to make aretreat. That is what I did last week.Last Sunday, June 13th, I went to Cardinal Stritch RetreatHouse at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL forour annual priests’ retreat. Fr. Rick attended the retreat theweek of June 6th.At those annual retreats, the priests have the opportunityto relax, to hear inspiring presentations that will help them toreflect upon their own spiritual journeys, to celebrate thesacrament of reconciliation, and to attend daily Mass. This annual retreat is a requirement by Canon Law but Ialways hope that those who attend it are not attendingmerely to satisfy requirements. After all, we should all usewhatever means are at our disposal to recharge the ol’spiritual batteries!Retreats and Days of Reflection are not a requirement forthe laity. But that does not mean that they would not do yougood.I encourage you to find the opportunity to take a day ortwo or three and go on a spiritual retreat. There areopportunities available locally for just such a purpose.Going on a retreat or days of reflection will help you to viewyour spiritual life more clearly. And just as important as renewing our spiritual life, makesure that you attempt to find some time this summer torefresh yourself and your family on some type of vacation orfamily outing. That type of relaxation will help you morethan most anything else. For those of you that might not be able to afford goingaway for a vacation this summer due to the economy, youcan always do your “stay-cation” on our parish grounds thisweek at the annual parish festival. For much less money than you would spend going away, you and your family can come to the fest for some greatentertainment, good food, and exciting rides. Your buck willgo a really long way if you purchase Mega Passes for yourchildren. The pass will allow them to ride all the rides for noadditional cost.Hope to see you at the festival!THE FESTIVAL BEGINS WEDNESDAY!Wednesday, June 23: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.Thursday, June 24: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.Friday, June 25: 6:00 p.m. to MidnightSaturday, June 26: 2:00 p.m. to MidnightSunday, June 27: 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.Wristband Specials:Wednesday: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. $20Thursday: 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. $20Saturday: 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. $15Sunday: 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. $22NO wristbands Friday or Saturday eveningsFood Court:If you do not find something to eat in our food court, something is wrong! He looked at the caddy and said, "I'veplayed so poorly all day, I think I'm going to go drownmyself in that lake."The caddy looked back at him and said, "It will neverwork. It will be just like your game has been. I don't thinkyou could keep your head down that long."Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary morethan fifty years. My Two CentsThoughts on StewardshipLiving StewardshipIn today’s Gospel Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you saythat I am?” (Lk. 9:20) Only Peter has the courage to say thatJesus is the Messiah—the anointed one. Jesus’ question is onethat we have to answer at some point for ourselves if we are totruly live as his disciples today. It is easy to avoid a directanswer, to rely on another’s answer or just to follow the rulesand say the right prayers, but if we call ourselves disciples—hisfollowers, then we have to face this question squarely. Is Jesusthe center of your life? If not, why not?Share YOUR thoughts at:mytwocents@stm-church.comGreeters for June 26 & 27, 20105:30 pm MassChapel: Rob & Dorothy MangusChoir: Lisa, Megan & Emily Dato6:30 am MassChapel: Frances & John PliskyChoir: Karen & Tim Rutz8:00 am MassMain: Nancy & James KaczkaChapel: Pat StrangeChoir: Denise & Allison Rusnak10:00 am MassMain: Marge SzafranskiChapel:Joan Mucha & Gen GogolakChoir: The Avila Family12:00 pm MassChapel: The Krieg FamilyOur apologies:This list was printed in error in last weekend’s bulletin.
