The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 27 November 2013Footballer who was ‘letgo’ shares his storyReport by Danielle ThompsonA FORMER promising youngfootballer who was ‘let go’ byLiverpool FC at the age of 18 but wenton to forge a successful career as acoach has written a book about hisexperiences in the sport – and urgedyoungsters not to give up on theirdreams if they don’t ‘make it big.’Mike Yates was talent–spotted at theage of seven playing for his local team,Burscough Dynamo and spent 10years in the youth set–up at Liverpool,alongside the likes of Steven Gerrardand Michael Owen.But his own hopes of glory wereshattered when the club’s youthcoach, Steve Heighway, sat him downin his family home to break the newsthat he wasn’t going to make it big.Instead, the Anfield club offered hima coaching job at their academy,which he took up.Now he written all about it anautobiography entitled, ‘StevenGerrard, Michael Owen and ... Me.’Mike, who lives in Burscough, toldthe <strong>Champion</strong>: “The book is analternative to reading aboutfootballers who have made it. Iwanted young footballers to knowhow hard it is to succeed.“Suddenly you are rejected, you areon the scrapheap and you have to findsomething else to do as a career. I wasvery lucky with my coaching offer, inthat I managed to stay in the game.“It’s not only hard for the players, it’sMike YatesCode NAhard for the parents and families ofthe players as well.“I wanted to write the book to thankmy mum and dad, to give somethingback to them after they made suchsacrifices for me as a child.”After 10 years as a coach at theacademy, Mike became theprogramme manager forInternational Football Academies atLiverpool and now writes footballprogrammes for soccer schools andoverseas academies.The 34–year–old said: “I want toWKgive something back and educate thenext generation.“A big part of it is to teach themfootball skills and also life skills, tohelp them do whatever they want todo in their life.“Kids should have fun and enjoy theexperience of being coached; it ismore about the journey, and what youcan take out of it.“You have got to know where youwant to get in an academy and everykid should have a dream but theyneed to understand and be preparedfor the pitfalls.“Key to success for us is making surewe have a great football programmeand a great programme for educatingplayers off the pitch which preparesthem for if they do not make it.“There are different ways of havingto cope with rejection, but everyonecan learn from experiences they havehad of rejection.“You can go off the rails, it is so hardto stay mentally strong, especially if itwas your dream and there is such a lotof pressure on young players, butthere is no reason why releasedplayers cannot have a happy andsuccessful life away from football.“I want anyone to be able to pick upthe book and relate to what I amsaying.
