The new gazebo.By the end of June, phase I of the long-range plan was toessentially complete to most everyone’s delight. Another notablea~RYC accomplislamelat was the naming of Louise Van Voorhis to sathe 1996 US Olympic <strong>Yacht</strong>ing Team.In August of that year the Corps of Engineers’ surgeplprotection project on the Genesee River was started. The <strong>Club</strong> 1 !Board of Directors was to review the design proposal for a deck t(1to go over the rocks in fiont of the clubhouse. This had to be Rdone sooner than planned from a <strong>Club</strong> budget viewpoint, but the S~window of opportunity provided by the Corps Of Engineers was Otoo good to pass up. This "good fortune" enabled the <strong>Club</strong> to wadd a significant piece of property in a very strategic location - lcimmediately adjacent to the clubhouse,trWhile attending a traditionally elaborate New Years Day lreception, January 1,1997, members were treated to an p,exceptional view. The Luedtke Engineering people were drivingnine steel columns in fi’ont of the clubhouse. These were tosupport a 20 by 60-foot deck over the stone surge barrierprotecting our north seawall. 1Corps of Engineers inspectors would not approve theoriginal installation of stone for the wave barrier north of theclubhouse. Additional stone had to be placed, raising the stone toa new height, necessitating redesign of the deck covering. Thisresulted in rescheduling the job as a winter 1997-98 project, tl1998 started with a bang! RYC was selected to host LYRA nin the year 2001. Robb Holt was re-elected President of LYRA tlThe <strong>Club</strong> owed a huge debt of gratitude to Tom Roth, and Sam Morse Vice President. Construction for the north deck SCommodore, 1995, 1996.
