You might attribute this to thefriendly, professional staff, but there is so much more to it thanthat. Whether you realize it or not, the warmth you experiencehas a lot to do with the design and architecture of the store. Thenew Aucoin Hart showroom — recently enlarged to twice itsoriginal size — has been designed with all the details of luxuryand comfort in mind: lush carpets instead of hard tile floors, warmlighting rather than glaring spotlights, soft music and comfortableseating for those who like to browse in comfort — you can try onas many rings as you like in our bridal area until you find the jewelof your dreams. Aucoin Hart Jewelers wants you to feel as if youare in someone’s (or your own) very nice living room, except thatyou are surrounded by some of the world’s most coveted treasures, carefully chosen from the collections of top global brands by theastute buyers at Aucoin Hart.“We are bringing an experience to our community that cannotbe found anywhere else,” says Tommy Aucoin Jr., president ofAucoin Hart Jewelers. “We want shopping here to be the finest, most comfortable experience possible. We worked hard to makethe store very elegant, but at the same time not stuffy or intimidating. It’s just not who we are.” That commitment involvedsix years in the design and construction phase, intense collaborationwith three architects, and countless hours of fine-tuning.Everything from the precise glow of the lighting to the pattern andtexture of the hand-made wallpaper was designed with comfortand luxury in mind, and with the same attention to detail that ittakes to curate a world-class selection of jewelry. Special acousticalfabrics and textures were even used throughout the store to absorbsound, enhancing the sense of peace and comfort. The lightingwas changed twice until it flawlessly met expectations, and unobtrusivespeakers were installed to waft music that runs a pleasingspectrum from New Orleans jazz to pop.10] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

The new showroom is open and spacious (4,000 square feet),but it is also intimate. aucoin hart jewelersDecades prior, watchmaker Bert Aucoin worked for HartJewelers after World War II. In 1957, Bert purchased the jewelrystore and moved it to its current location on Metairie Road. Witha strong desire to keep “Hart” in the name, Bert Aucoin was ableto keep the customer base of Hart Jewelers and also relocate thestore to an area that he called home — Old Metairie. By the late1960s, the second generation of Aucoins, Tommy and Michael, had joined their father in the jewelry business, where Bert and hiswife, Hazel, still worked side by side.In 1972, Bert Aucoin passed away suddenly and with an uncertainfuture and pressure to sell the business, Hazel made the decisionto keep the store and continue her husband’s dream. Tommyand his wife, Donna, committed to working at her side, much likeBert and Hazel had done decades before, to make Aucoin Hart oneof the best jewelry stores in the country. Today, the third generation(Tommy Jr. and Ryan) work alongside their father, carryingon the family’s culture and philosophy of personal service, trustand value. Aucoin Hart is an ever-growing family business, nowone of the top independent jewelers in the country. Nationallyrecognized as a leader in innovation, design and manufacturing,Aucoin Hart has built a reputation as a full-service jeweler and diamondhouse, importing exquisite stones from the world’s leadingdiamond cutters. The renovation of Aucoin Hart Jewelers is important fromanother perspective as well: it is a testament to the Aucoins’ confidencein the strength and resilience of the community they love12] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

designer spotlightDrop earrings from theSiviglia Drops collection, in18k hand engraved gold.$2,270Bicego began his training as a gold artisan at his father’s 50-yearoldatelier in the Veneto region of Italy. His instincts were refinedat the workbench and led him to create unique, multi-textureditems that are both beautiful and highly original. He began toexperiment with design, blending urban-inspired lines with ethnicmotifs and merging organic, natural forms with more classicsilhouettes. His dedication to old-world craftsmanship is alwaysevident on every surface of gold, transforming this luxurious elementinto spirals and hand-engraved beads. In his words; “All mycreations must be manipulated by hand in order for them to preservea unique and luxurious experience.”The new pieces in the Siviglia collectionare Bicego’s latest interpretationof this unique approach, and a perfectexample of one of the hottest trends injewelry at the moment — luscious dropearrings. The statement aspect of theseearrings lies in the finish. The gold bearsthe marks of Bicego’s particular hand-finishingtechnique of engraving. Before itis hand finished, the 18k gold is createdwith special forms to recall nature’s variableand irregular forms. The matchingSiviglia ring interprets another of today’stop trends — wide open links in necklacesand bracelets, and even watch bracelets. The necklace in the Murano Link collection is anupdated version of the classic Bicego look, but withfaceted gemstones (rather than smooth cabochons)and open oval links. This necklace is convertible. It can be worn in many different ways, including as a shorter necklace and a braceletor instead of one long necklace, it could be twodifferent bibs, two bracelets and two lariats.Once again, Bicego has captured the sensibility ofthe modern woman, creating pieces that are as appropriatefor the daytime as they are for the evening, even if the eveninginvolves a quiet respite of gazing at the stars.“All my creationsmust bemanipulated byhand in orderfor them topreserve a uniqueand luxuriousexperience.”Ring from the SivigliaDrops collection, in 18khand engraved gold.$1,680Bracelets from theDiamond Sivigliacollection, in 18khand engraved goldwith diamonds.$1,530 and $1,63026] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

The world of Rolex is all about performance and aesthetics. Thecompany uses high-grade 904L steel in its watches, which is muchharder than the industry standard (Rolex designed its own toolsto work with it) and manufactures its own ceramic bezels. And ofcourse, Rolex builds its own mechanical movements. The result isa collection of watches engineered for performance and designedto stand the test of time.Rolex is also about celebrating the performancesof others. Many of the world’s topathletes have served or currently serve as Rolexambassadors, and the brand is associated withsome of the world’s key sporting events, includingWimbledon Tennis, the US Open GolfChampionship and Formula 1 racing. In theequestrian world, the company is sponsor of theRolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping: CHIOAachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows MastersTournament and CHI Geneva. It is also sponsorof several yachting events, including the MaxiYacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup,both off the coast of Sardinia, the Rolex FastnetRace in the Celtic Sea and the Rolex SydneyHobart Yacht Race in Australia. This extensive involvement in the world of sports is reinforcedby an impressive roster of brand ambassadors, including championgolfers Adam Scott and Tiger Woods, racing legend TomKristensen, tennis great Roger Federer, yachtsman Paul Cayardand equestrian Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.The new 40mm Oysterperpetual GMT-Master II.$8,950Rolex also has a roster of high-performance timepieces to matchthe prowess of these champions. The Rolex Oyster PerpetualCosmograph Daytona is one of the brand’s most important newmodels this year. The distinctive ice-blue dial is only available onthe brand’s platinum editions, including the new Daytona. Todate, there have only been four others issued with this combination, making it something rare and collectible. The Daytona wasoriginally introduced in 1963, and was a favorite of Paul Newman.32] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

The Oyster Perpetual GMT Master II is another important new introduction, in904L steel, a proprietary Rolex high-grade steel, with a rotating bezel that representsa first: it is made of a two-color ceramic Cerachrom bezel insert in blue and black representingday and night. The two colors are perfectly melded together, with no visibleseam between the two, by a unique process developed and patented by Rolex whichallows this ceramic component with two distinct colors to be produced as a singlepiece. Cerachrom is scratch-proof, corrosion-resistant and color-fast. The movement, made by Rolex, has a Parachrom hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex inan exclusive alloy. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the Parachrom hairspring offers greatstability when exposed to temperature variations and remains up to 10 times moreprecise in case of shocks than a traditional hairspring.Ladies’ watches are also an important part of the world of Rolex. Thisyear, female aficionados are raving about the brand’s new mid-sizewatches, with cases measuring just 31mm — a size that sitscomfortably on a woman’s wrist. Winners in this new mid-sizerange include the 31mm Oyster Perpetual Lady Datejustin steel and rose gold. Rose gold has become the new, modern standard in both jewelry and watches now, andRolex’s unique combination of steel and Everose goldgives this watch a special functional versatility. It issuitable for any occasion, from formal to casual — thechocolate-colored dial is stylish, with diamond accents, but also classic, with Rolex’s signature Roman numeralsand steel accents.Another great choice is the 31mm steel OysterPerpetual Lady Datejust, with diamond bezel and aglimmering mother-of-pearl dial with diamond indexmarkers. Each of these watches is a certified chronometer, meaning that its mechanical movement has undergonea series of stringent tests by the official Swiss ChronometerTesting Institute, which ensures a high standard of accuracyand precision. idal blissby HEDDA SCHUPAKEven in an enduring category like diamond engagement rings, trends evolve toensure that classic doesn’t become boring. Here are six of the freshest new takeson the traditional engagement ring for brides that want something unique.CushionRound diamonds will always be popular, but today’s bride who wantssomething a bit more distinctive may choose an alternative, such as thecushion. For brides who like the vintage look but not the rectangular emeraldcut, the softly rounded cushion cut is perfect. Its large facets give it asoft glow. The cut was invented before the advent of electricity, when roomswere lit by candlelight, and it’s designed to capture the candle’s glow.FloralFloral and leaf motifs are delicate, feminine, and always in fashion. Thisclassic motif now extends to bridal jewelry. It dovetails with another trendfor modern settings: split and twisted shanks, meaning there’s some interestingdesign along the sides, not just at the top of the ring. The shank of aring, as it hugs your finger like a vine, adds dimension and movement to anengagement ring — and sets the scene for the placement of more sparklingdiamonds.the hottestbridal trendsThe latest trends in Engagement RingsMelissa Sweetillusion neckballgown withlacquered laceand appliqué byDavid’s Bridal.56] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

idal blissFancy YellowLove color, but just don’t feel engaged without a diamond?Consider a fancy yellow diamond (like Kelly Clarkson did).Shopping for a fancy colored diamond is a little different thanwhat you may be familiar with. Where the Four C’s all helpdetermine the value of a colorless diamond, the most importantdefining aspect of a fancy colored diamond is its color. Ayellow diamond is harder than any other yellow gemstone, and therefore has greater brilliance.Touch of RoseThe trend for color in engagement rings extends to metal, and the metal of choice today is rose gold. The coppery tonesof rose gold (a blend of gold with a copper alloy) are romanticand soft, rather than flashy. Rose gold is perfect to mixand match with any other metals, from yellow gold to whitemetals like platinum and silver, or even blackened metals. And since rose gold is now the color of choice in fine jewelryand timepieces, your engagement ring will match the rest ofyour jewelry.Forevermark DiamondsHaloForevermark diamonds are the hottest thing in customizedjewelry. They represent the top 1% of diamonds in the worldand are branded by the De Beers group of companies, theworld’s largest diamond mining organization. Forevermarkbridal jewelry made by Aucoin Hart is customized in twoways: the design is chosen by the customer; and the diamondis chosen, also by the customer, from a selection of spectacularForevermark diamonds. It’s the best of both worlds. The halo setting is one of the biggest trends for engagementrings in years. A band of smaller diamonds,i.e. the halo, surrounding the solitaire give it a lookof being a much bigger center stone. Sometimes, thehalo goes two-tiered, often teaming up diamondswith a row of colored gems in one of the surroundingrings. Brides who like the look of a cushion cut butprefer the scintillation of a round diamond opt for around stone in a cushion-shaped halo.58] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINETUFTS COMMUNICATIONS MAGAZINE [3

idal blissby HEDDA SCHUPAKThe right jewelry for thebig dayHere’s some advice you won’t hear in a bridal shop:invest in a good piece of jewelry for your wedding day!FFor most brides, the hunt for The Dress begins barely a moment after “yes,” if not before.Rare is the bride-to-be that hasn’t already given at least some thought to the style of dress shewants for her big day, if she hasn’t been envisioning it since kindergarten!Despite this focus, it should not overshadow the importance of jewelry on the big day. Don’tskimp on wedding day jewelry. The dress will be worn once, but jewelry is a family heirloomthat can be worn not only for the bride’s whole life, but also by future generations.Whether your taste runs to classic pearls or something more dramatic, remember that weddingday jewelry should always complement face, hair and dress, never compete with it.“Everything needs to stay in proportion,” says fashion expert and celebrity stylist MichaelO’Connor, who’s helped many movie stars choose jewelry for red carpet appearances. Thebride’s face shape and hairstyle should be considered first. Big hair — whether it’s full or long— needs a bigger earring, but make sure the shape of the earring doesn’t directly mirror theshape of the face.Brides seeking an elongated silhouette (and who isn’t?) should opt for a 1.5 to 2.5-inch dropearring, says Amanda Gizzi, head of the Jewelry Information Center in New York. The earring’slength will bring attention up to her face. A classic drop can make the face look slimmer, whilea wider drop style, such as a chandelier or doorknocker, can balance out a long face.Round diamond pendantset in white gold.$1,750Diamond clusterearrings set inwhite gold.$3,100Diamond drop earringsset in white gold.$4,20060] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINE

idal blissColor is a hot trend forweddings, from flowersto cakes and even thebride’s dress!Too dainty is passé, but a big earring, a statement necklace,or an armful of bangles is on trend. Gizzi says the key to gettingthe look right is to pick one statement piece and don’t overdothe rest. “A bride should err on the side of restraint. It’s a morerefined, elegant look,” says O’Connor. “The bride is already thestar of the day, don’t gild the lily.”He suggests creatively placing a piece of jewelry in the hair, because while many brides dream of wearing a diamond tiara, not many can afford one. Likewise, a beautiful diamond broochis not only in proportion with a long dress or big hair, but alsosomething that can be worn and handed down years later. Aword of caution: if you amp up the hair jewelry and earrings, take everything else down (or skip it) so you don’t look like aChristmas tree.Keep the jewelry in proportion to the dress as well asthe hair. Jennie Ma, fashion editor of bridal websiteThe Knot.com, says the simpler the dress, the moreornate the jewelry can be, but if the dress is heavilyembellished, go more modest with the jewelry.62] AUCOIN HART JEWELERS MAGAZINESapphireand diamondearrings byPenny Preville.$4,435Diamond banglebracelet in whte gold.$3,975Forevermarkdiamondpendantin white gold.$2,185Pendants and v-shape necklaces look best withv-neck dresses (like Kate Middleton’s), whilelonger necklaces, chokers, or statement pieceswork best with strapless dresses.Color is a hot trend for weddings, fromflowers to cakes and even the bride’sdress!
