It consists ofsilicon wafer to detect pressure, a silicon chip for substrate, and an insulating glass plate (SeeFigure 5.8). The silicon wafer to detect pressure is etched to form an electrode and a diaphragm, and a vacuum gap between the silicon and the glass plate is made. The silicon chip for substrate is also etched to form the other electrode. These electrodes ofsilicon wafer and silicon chip separated by the vacuum gap form a kind of capacitor. The shape of the diaphragm changes depending on atmospheric pressure, causing the vacuumgap to expand or contract. Such deformation causes the change in the electrostatic capacity of thegap and the electrodes. This slight change is detected as an electric signal and converted toatmospheric pressure. This electrostatic capacity digital barometer features high precision and long-time stability.7
