ADVERTORIALLEGALCORNER‘Some timely advicein case you split‘Breaking up doesn’t have to be hard todo - if you put romance to one side brieflywhen you move in together’ says SheilaGlyn-Owen, solicitor at Phillips. ‘You maybe one of the 3-4 million couples who arechoosing to live together without gettingmarried. Many cohabit successfully all theirlives without ever feeling the need to marry, but many couples break up - and only thendiscover how few rights they have.“Common law” wife or husband is a myth. The reality is that if you split up, you haveno automatic right to the property if it is inyour partner’s name; if you rent your home, you have no automatic right to stay; and ifyour partner dies without making a will, youwon’t automatically inherit anything fromhim or her. If you have children together thesituation is even more complex. So what practical steps can you take? If you’rerenting, put both names on the tenancy. If you are buying a new place together, ormoving into a home your partner alreadyowns, then think carefully about getting a“Declaration of Trust” drawn up. This is alegally binding document that spells out theproportion of the property each unmarriedpartner will receive if you break up. If youare contributing more financially thanyour partner towards the property it willprotect your investment in the event that theproperty is eventually sold. The Trust can be as simple or as complex asyou require and if your circumstances changeit can be re-written. It should include:• The percentage of the property each of youwill own• The percentage of the deposit each willpay and how much each will contribute tomortgage payments• Who pays for purchase expenses, utilitiesand other outgoings• The provisions for buying each other out• An agreed mechanism for valuing theproperty• Provisions for children, such as enablingthe child to stay in the property until he orshe reaches maturityNo-one knows what the future holds,’concludes Sheila ‘so my advice is take somepractical steps to protect yourself. Investingin a Declaration of Trust and ensuring youboth have Wills could save you a lot of stress, time and expense in the event that youseparate or if one of you dies.’If you would like more information about willsand if you are reading this as a step-parent orif you are in your second marriage and havechildren from your first and want to make sureyour children benefit from your estate pleasecontactCall Sheila Glyn-Owen or Ben Holden atPhillips Solicitors, tel: 01256 460830.Visit our website for lots more information atwww.phillips-law.co.ukCharityPlant Stall2012Last year, in what was a challenging gardening year, but with your help we still managedto raise £2806 for Macmillan Cancer Support, selling plants, cut flowers, fresh fruit andvegetables, planted tubs and cards. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this fantastic sum by bringing alongtheir surplus plants and vegetables and to all those who stopped to buy from us.This year we will again have a stall on the drive of Lynten House in Monk Sherborne andhope you will continue to support us – as last year all proceeds will go to Macmillan. We hope to open the stall late February/early March (weather permitting) with daffodils for50p a bunch. We will also have pots of bulbs, primroses, polyanthus and perennials. Many thanks again to everyone who supported us and if you haven’t visited the stall we hopeyou will give it a try this year. Bert’s BlogWhat a confusing time of year for a dog Christmasis – lights are put outside and trees put inside. Iwas allowed nowhere near the tree inside in caseI disgraced myself. As if I would! It was hungwith many large round balls, whichI was not allowed to play with, andhad colourful packages underneath. The miniatures all visited and had agreat time unwrapping the packageswhich the Mrs had taken such careto wrap up. I had been given strictinstructions not to do this but theydid not get into trouble when theydid it and there was a great deal ofmerriment. Eventually I was allowedto participate in the unwrapping asyou can see. I gave the Boss a largelick and the Mrs received my paw like a lady.I received a number of things, the worst beingyet another bath, then a turning out of my bed,but things improved when I was given a bone, some turkey, and a large chew to keep for later. The bath meant I smelt like a right woofter whenmy girlfriend Jazz arrived. She lives with a coupleof the miniatures and we go beatingtogether. Jazz is black instead ofbrown; her mum didn’t eat enoughchocolate for her to be the same asme, I’m a real chocolate. She and Ihave retrieved lots of pheasants latelyand I have learnt that I must staywith the Boss until he says I can go.This was a hard lesson to learn as Iwas dying to stretch my legs, but thepraise I get when I behave more thancompensates for running wild and Idon’t like being told off in front of Jazz– it’s embarrassing.

Sherborne St John Churchof England Primary SchoolAs I write this article, we have just started the SpringTerm although the weather seems to suggest that weare still in the heart of winter! Many congratulations toall the Key Stage 1 children who presented a wonderfulNativity production before Christmas, despitestruggling with coughs, colds and other illnesses! Theparents and other visitors who saw it really enjoyed theperformances. Many thanks to all the children and parents that were sosupportive during the period of the inspection. At the end of January , all of the Infant children will bevisiting Windsor Castle to find out about castles and thepeople who live in them, as part of their project entitledA Royal Invitation. Meanwhile Class 3’s topic has thealliterative title Visits, Visions and Visitors – a trip aroundLondon (sounds like this may have to include a classouting!) whilst Class 4 will have a science-based themecalled All Change. On 4th February, Year 6 pupils will head off toStubbington Study Centre for a week’s residential tripwhich has lots of outdoor activities so they are hopingfor dry weather! Meanwhile the remaining Juniorchildren will have a separate topic week at school, which will involve mixing up the different year groupsand exploring different creative activities. The subjectis top secret at the moment – all will be revealed to thechildren shortly! At the beginning of December we received notice (lessthan 24 hours!) of our Ofsted inspection, and the finalreport was published just before Christmas. We werevery pleased to find that Ofsted agreed with our ownjudgement that we are definitely a GOOD school, and itpraised both the teaching and the school environment. It was rewarding to read that they observed “stimulatingand challenging lessons that interest pupils”, and that“attainment at the end of Year 6 in reading, writing andmathematics is above the national average”. Perhapsone of the most important conclusions was that “Pupilsthoroughly enjoy school and say that lessons are fun.”The photos below show some of Class 3 during theirVictorian Day in December. All the children came toschool in appropriate costumes, and at break time theonly games allowed were hoops and marbles! As youcan see, the classroom was far less colourful than itusually is, and the teaching much stricter – with thethreat of the cane not far away! The children reallyentered into the spirit of the day and had great fun– even if it was a bit scary! They seemed relieved toreturn to the 21st Century the next day!Sherbert – SSJ Villager Correspondent

Happy New Year from The Priory SchoolChristmas is always such a busy time in primaryschools! There is always so much to fit in – decoratingthe tree, the Christmas Fair, the nativity, the juniorplay, parties, the visit to the pantomime, Christmasdinner and not forgetting, of course, all the usualacademic subjects!Every day is different and routine is definitely a thing ofthe past. Now we are back at school once more after theChristmas break and we hope that 2013 will be full ofmore new experiences and lots of exciting projects. As you probably know we are a very small school, butwe are delighted to be starting the new year with twoextra members of school, this time of the four leggedand furry variety in the form of two rabbits. We havealready held a competition to name our new additionsand having considered the responses from children (andadults), the most popular choices were “Bubble” and“Squeak” and so Bubble and Squeak they are called. Mrs.Collisson and Mrs. Bowman have shown great skills inbasic woodwork and have put together a super hutchand so Bubble and Squeak have now become the 25thand 26th members of the Year One class! I am sure thatthe rabbits will be greatly loved by us all and will bringmany years of education and enjoyment to the wholeschool community! The other big event taking place in January is the YoungVoices concert at the O2 arena. This is where we shallbe taking fifty two 6-11 year olds to sing with thousandsof other children from the south and, if last year’s eventwas anything to go by, there will not be a spare seat inthe house! It is sure to be an amazing experience andeven though it is a very long day (we leave school atlunchtime and do not arrive back until after midnight),it is all extremely worthwhile! On behalf of everyone at The Priory School, may Iwish you a very Happy New Year and I look forward towelcoming you to the school in the near future.Suzanne Kelly, Head Teacher

Stay Safe This Winter! By Ian RandWith winter upon us and the nights drawing in, staying safe on your way home is always importantbut often pushed to the back of our minds as we think about our cosy, pleasant destination. As a selfdefenceand self-protection instructor, one of the first things I teach students is awareness. It’s the first‘A’ of Self Protection and the most important! Without awareness how can you spot trouble brewingand apply the second ‘A’ of Self Protection, ‘Avoidance’? (We’ll save that one for a future article). This short article can’t cover all aspectsof awareness and self protection butwill offer a few suggestions to improveit. Firstly, good awareness is not aboutbeing paranoid. When we get in a carwe put our seatbelt on, almost withoutthinking, in case we are unfortunateenough to crash but not because weexpect to. This is how good awarenessand self protection should be, aninstinctive precaution that doesn’toverly concern us. Like most things,it’s all about getting the right balance. Here’s a simple test of your everydayawareness in regard to personal safety. It may not seem very relevant to selfdefence but self protection is far morethan that and is also about takingsimple, yet often forgotten precautionsto prevent misfortune occurring inall aspects of our lives. Once you startbecoming more aware and mindful ofsituations and surroundings aroundyou by practising games like this, you will quickly find it rolls over intoother areas of life and you will start tonotice potential threats before they geta chance to escalate, giving you moreopportunity to practise the other ‘A’ ofSelf Protection, ‘Avoidance’.Try to visualise a public place youknow well such as a local pub, restaurant or community centre andcheck your answer to the followingquestion next time you are there. Ifan emergency situation such as a firewere to happen, where is the nearestfire exit (not the normal exit) for youto make your safe escape? Once youhave decided, check if you were rightthe next time you’re there. Once youhave checked, ask yourself if you knewwhere one (or preferably more) of thefire exits were? If you did then welldone, it shows a good level of generalawareness and regard for personalsafety. If not, don’t worry too much, most people would be the same andhere’s a simple way to improve yourawareness. Every time you enter anunfamiliar place make sure one ofyour first priorities is to make yourselfaware of the nearest fire exit. From an‘Avoidance’ perspective, it would alsobe a good idea to position yourself asnear as possible to it, or at least to anyexit. Knowing where your quickestand safest escape route is in advancecan be life saving when any kind ofdanger, including the drunken loutwho wants to pick a fight with you, presents itself. From another Self Protectionperspective, when you’re next outside, why not train your awareness and stopit from wandering into a dangerousstate of being ‘switched off ’? Makeyourself aware of people and thingsaround you. Advanced driversperform ‘commentary driving’ wherethey anticipate possible dangersand obstacles in their paths, suchas a parked car that may suddenlypull out, or a child that may run outfrom behind it. Using this methodto improve your awareness (I don’trecommend doing it out-loud in thestreet unless you want strange looksthough!) make a mental note of thingssuch as someone hanging around on astreet corner or a concealed entranceto an alleyway you are approaching.Chances are they are not a concern orthreat but good self protection will atleast make you aware of their presenceso, if the worst case scenario were tohappen you would not be taken bysurprise and could act accordingly.Again, it is important to keep abalance and also note the positivethings, such as safe places you couldescape to if needed. In preparation for the next article, you could also practice the 2nd ‘A’ ofself protection, ‘Avoidance’ and notwalk towards that corner or give thealleyway entrance a wider berth ifyour instincts tell you to. Please don’tconfuse instinct with ego. Instinctswill, often correctly, tell us to avoidsomething or someone. Ego will tellus to ignore our instinct and that wehave every right to do somethingsuch as walking past the dark alleyor towards the suspicious lookingstranger. Acting on instinct has savedmany a life, following ego has costmore!Until next time, please enjoyyourselves but stay safe.Ian Rand is the Instructor atHampshire Self Protection, a martialarts club with a difference, offeringpractical karate and self-defence/self protection classes for Children,Adults and Ladies only. We havebeen very surprised at the number of times peoplebelieve they are using seasoned wood, only to discover(using our moisture meters) that the wood isreally damp! Morgaston Woods In The WarBy Chris Williams, Relative of the many Warners and Poldens in SSJ Churchyard.here is a popular belief that the concrete road which runsthrough Morgaston Woods (behind The Vyne) was builtduring the War as a Decoy to divert German bombers awayfrom the Ammunition Depot at Bramley. The truth is thatMorgaston Woods was itself an Ammunition Depot, so itcertainly was not a desirable target.I grew up in the war, in an old Army hut, opposite BeaurepaireMill, by the old iron bridge between Sherborne and Bramley. We were in Sherborne Parish, but the Post Office had decidedto put us in Bramley. The road outside carried a constant stream of Army lorries, some displaying red flags, to show that they were carryinglive ammunition. They were running between the big CentralAmmunition Depot at Bramley and the subsidiary Depot inMorgaston Woods. The concrete road had been put in to allow these lorriesaccess to internal parts of the Depot. In addition, there wasan extensive network of narrow (2 foot) gauge railway tracksserving the whole of the woods on both sides of MorgastonRoad. There were two level-crossings over Morgaston Road, and two more over the concrete road.the road. If we were lucky, we would find a couple of the littlerailway trucks standing at the top of an incline alongsidethe road, the wheels scotched with a stone. Being boys, thetemptation was too much and we kicked away the stones, gavethe trucks a push, and jumped on, riding slowly down theslope, sitting on boxes of ammunition. At the top of the hill, alongside the road, was a loadingcomplex, with lots of roller conveyers and other excitingthings to play with. Looking back, I cannot believe how casualthe whole thing was. Our parents would probably have beenhorrified if they knew what we were doing! No Health &Safety nonsense then.During the War, the Vyne was occupied by Tormore School, evacuated from East Kent. (Read about it at:-http://www.rupertwilloughby.co.uk/archives/date/2011/06.)One of the pupils remembers:- “In Morgaston Wood, therewas even the thrilling spectacle of an Army ammunitiondump”. Seems we were not the only boys playing amongstexplosives! After the war ended, the depot continued in use for severalyears, but eventually it was all cleared out, and all that remainsis part of the guard area at the junction of Morgaston Roadand Vyne Road. There are also two places along the concreteroad where you can still see where the railway tracks crossedover. The level-crossings on Morgaston Road have beentarmaced over. There is also a loading ramp alongside thewooden sheds in the woods.Incidentally, if you search in the brambles behind the sheds, you will find a pile of the ornate cast iron railings of theold carriage bridge to the Vyne, slowly rusting away. Thebridge was destroyed about fifty years ago, in a flood, andthe National Trust seems to have no interest in rebuilding it.Likewise, they make no mention of an ammunition dump intheir literature, and persist in the ludicrous idea of a dummyairstrip.Because there were several houses and a farm alongMorgaston Road, it could not be closed to the publiccompletely, but there was a guard post at each end, andlarge signs threatening dire penalties for “STOPPING ORLOITERING”However, on Sundays, the place seemed to be deserted, andno-one bothered about a couple of small boys loitering downSome years ago, I was walking my dog in the woods, and cameacross a chap with a metal detector. He proudly showed methe things he had dug up, several old threepenny bits, all dated1941. I asked him if he knew why they were there? He didn’t.When I told him it used to be an ammunition dump, he wenta sort of white, got into his car and shot off! I can’t think why.The Army hut in which I grew up has long gone, replaced witha very nice house. The iron bridge, built in 1831, for Mrs. Brocas of Beaurepaire,is still there, with a ridiculous 7.5 ton weightlimit. I once witnessed a low-loader, carrying a full size steamrailway engine from the Depot at Bramley, crossing the bridge. The locomotive alone weighed over 45tons....! Not bad for a 180 year old iron bridge.

Concerns were expressedin relation to the likely increase in traffic on the A339 that thenew development would create.VICE-CHAIR APPOINTMENT: Chairman Councillor Boyleadvised that Cllr Lord Hayter wished to step down from hisrole as Vice-Chairman but to remain on the council so thathe could concentrate more time on his role on the VillageHall Committee. It was resolved unanimously to appoint CllrGibson as Vice-Chair.MS VILLAGE HALL: The village hall has seen some livelyevenings recently with a very successful cheese and wineevening followed by a chilli evening just before Christmas. Both attracted a good number of locals and thanks are givento the current village hall committee for their great efforts.STILES: A request was presented to the council for two stileson footpath 10 to be replaced with kissing gates. HCC areto be contacted to determine the relevant landowners andoptions for progressing such a request.PLAYGROUND: Cllr Du Boulay advised that concerns havebeen expressed regarding the drainage of the play area. It wasagreed to obtain quotes for the digging of a ditch, installationof drainage pipework and erection of a fence to enclose theexposed areas.PARISH WEBSITE: BDBC have removed the websiteservice they previously provided to parish councils withinthe borough. The council considered 3 different alternativewebservice providers and decided upon Vision ICT to run theparish website going forward. In addition an initial subsidy of£375 from BDBC will be applied for to help with these costs.MILLENIUM TREES: A report was received on the overallhealth and condition of the Millenium oak trees alongSalters Heath Road. The report from Cedardale stated thatthe trees were sound and in good health and that the guardssurrounding the trees could now be removed. A quote forthis work was discussed, but given the expense, it was agreedby the council that the removal of the tree guards would beundertaken by volunteers on an as and when basis.BUDGET / PRECEPT 12/13: The council carefully reviewedour budget costs for the forthcoming financial year. Costswere approved by all members present. Consideration wasthen given to the level of the precept to be requested fromBDBC. It was agreed unanimously to keep the precept at itscurrent level of £9,450. The final tax base figures (the numberthat determines the per residence tax charge) were intended tobe published in January. These figures will take into accountthe new council tax support scheme introduced by the currentgovernment. It is likely that the changes will result in areduction in the tax base figures. Without additional fundingfrom the borough council / government this would meanan increase in the tax figure per residence. However there isexpected to be some level of grant funding to offset this rise, but the actual amount is currently not known. The next meeting, following publication of The Villager, willtake place on Wednesday 20th March 2013.Camilla Du Boulay.

NOVEMBER’S MEETINGThe Council met on 26th November 2012 and 17thDecember 2012 and the following matters werediscussed.Neighbourhood PlanThe Parish Council had been hoping to push ahead with aneighbourhood plan and join up with other local parishes,in order to give the plan more strength and spread thecosts. With that in mind the Councillors had been attendingmeetings of the surrounding parishes with a very positiveresponse. Unfortunately, it now appears that the fundingposition has changed, so that this is no longer feasible. Anapplication for funding has been submitted to BDBC for SSJalone and the BDBC notifications and map have been postedon the notice boards. It is vital that we get a broad sectionof the village involved in this, any one who would like to getinvolved or has a view on the future of planning in the parishshould get in contact with Julian Crawley.Development threat North of Marnel Park BDB75761/2As in many of the previous meetings the threat ofdevelopment North of Marnel Park remains a cause forconcern. Although this application was rejected by BDBCboth in July and September, we have now had confirmationthat David Wilson Homes have appealed this decision andthat appeal will be heard at the beginning of April. The ParishCouncil has agreed to employ Edward Dawson (who has agreat deal of experience of such appeals) to assist with this andspeak on behalf of the Council at the appeal. The assistance ofthe Sherborne Planning Integrity Group (SPIG) is also vital inthis matter. We will again need the village to turn out in forceto the Appeal to show strength of feeling on this issue in duecourse.HighwaysWe are very aware that the state of many of the roads in thearea is a cause for concern and this issue is continuouslyreferred to HCC. The Clerk is researching whether it ispossible to get monies under a 106 provision for some ofthese. We have also contacted HCC to investigate floodingproblems in Elm Road and Cranes Road and deal withblocked drains. It would also be very helpful if residents withroadside properties could ensure that their hedges and treesare properly cut back so that traffic signs and pavements arenot blocked. The footpaths over the triptrap bridge and onKiln Lane have also been reported to the local authority forrepairs. The Chute PavilionQuotes are being obtained for the Chute Pavilion to be paintedand cleaned and more urgently work has been authorisedto repair the playground. Hopefully this will have beencompleted on reading this. In addition, it has been suggestedthat additional equipment at the recreation ground, by way ofa ‘green gym’ would be well received. We are looking into thepossibility of getting grants to help pay for this. A request touse the recreation ground at night for telescopic research hasalso been made.Bus serviceStagecoach have insisted that it is not commercially viablefor them to increase the provision of bus services through thevillage during the day. The positioning of the new bus stophas also been raised with HCC.WebsiteWe are very grateful to Graham Crook for all the work he hasdone to get the new website up and running and his continuedmaintenance. He needs regular updates, so please let himknow if there is anything that you feel should be included.Anyone who would like to advertise on the site should also getin contact with Graham at graham@ssjvillage.org.AllotmentsThe tenancy year for allotments has been altered to gofrom January to December, to allow better control andthe reallocation of any plots before they get to overgrown.Amended tenancy agreements have been issued. It has alsobeen agreed to have a one tier rent for all plots, which hasbeen increased so it is in line with other allotments in theBasingstoke area. There will, however be concessions fortenants over 65 years old.Planning mattersThe proposed development on Dark Lane (for three houses)has been withdrawn by the applicants following objections, but it expected to be resubmitted at some stage in the nearfuture.Natasha RougierParish Clerk of Sherborne St John Parish Council
