The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 16 October 2013Pupils brewup <strong>for</strong> charityReport by Tom MartinPUPILS at a school in Crosby havebeen brewing up to raise funds <strong>for</strong>charity.Sixth Formers from St. Mary’sCollege served hot drinks,donated cakes and pastries tostaff and students in the schoollibrary as part of the World’sBiggest Coffee Morning.It was all part of the nationalevent to raise money <strong>for</strong>Macmillan Cancer Support.Meanwhile, youngsters in theschool’s Bright Sparks nurseryenjoyed a similar fundraisingevent with staff and parents.Children at St. Mary’sPreparatory School, The Mount,also got in on the act by visitingthe nursery to raffle a hamper ofdonated chocolate items and torun a ‘how many coffee beans inthe jar?’ competition.In total, the events are expectedto raise more than £600 <strong>for</strong> thecharity which works to improvethe lives of people affected bycancer by providing practical,medical and financial support,and pushing <strong>for</strong> better cancercare.All the money raised will be paidto Macmillan via the Just Givingpage of Nicky Lopez, a teachingassistant at The Mount(www.justgiving.com/teamdopez).A spokesman <strong>for</strong> the school said:“As a tireless campaigner <strong>for</strong> thePupils head to the coffee andcakes event with a wide varietyof tasty treats Code NAcharity, it seemed fitting to makethe contribution through herpage and add it to the money shehas already raised <strong>for</strong> Macmillanfrom a number of long distancerunning events.”St. Mary’s principal, MikeKennedy, commented: “I amdelighted that pupils in all threeof our departments decided to getinvolved in this event and raisefunds <strong>for</strong> what is an exceptionallygood cause.“St. Mary’s students have anexcellent track record insupporting charities andthe coffee morning was anothergood example of how keen theyare to make a difference.”Macmillan chiefs hope thatwhen all the money is in thisyear’s event will have been aneven bigger <strong>success</strong> than in 2012when 115,000 people wereinvolved, raising a record £15million.CMBAMAGHULL FC is celebrating their<strong>success</strong> after winning an impressive15 trophies during last season’sgames.Mark Thorpe, the under 12’smanager has helped secure the cluba place in three nationaltournaments and one Pumainternational cup, as well as takingthe club up to West Sussex wherethey played in a two day eventagainst various oppositions.Throughout the tournament theclub didn’t loose one game whichresulted in them becoming thewinners <strong>for</strong> their age category. Thiswasn’t the only <strong>success</strong> story of theseason, when they competed in thePuma international cup againstteams from America they addedanother trophy to their cabinet,resulting in winning an impressivesix tournaments across Lancashireand Merseyside.Mark Thorpe said: “I feel it isimportant to recognise the boys’achievements, and this willprobably stay with them <strong>for</strong> years tocome.
