This is a deeply moving, reflective elegyabout the bond between a mother and son, and three generations linked by a chain of love,loss and courage.Melvyn Bragg was born in 1939 and educated at Wigton’s Nelson Thomlinson Schooland at Oxford, where he read History. He is President of the National Campaign for theArts and in 1998 he was made a life peer. He won an Academy Fellowship at the BAFTATelevision Awards in 2010. He presents In Our Time on Radio 4. His novels include TheMaid of Buttermere, The Soldier’s Return, which won the WH Smith Literary Award, A Sonof War and Crossing the Lines, both long-listed for the Man Booker Prize. His last novel,Remember Me, was published to great critical acclaim in 2008.
