2.4 The Technical Infrastructure Zone<br />

Background and rationale<br />

The existence of technical facilities for generation and transfer of electrical power, for<br />

deviation, storage and redistribution of waters; the road network; buildings and<br />

facilities, etc. The zone is formed according to the requirements of PAA and for<br />

achieving the Ideal Goals of the <strong>Park</strong> 1.3.1 and 1.7.3.<br />

Purpose of the Technical Infrastructure Zone<br />

To ensure the normal functioning of facilities and installations by providing for<br />

proper maintenance and security.<br />

Description, physical and geographic characteristics<br />

The sites and facilities included in this zone are scattered throughout the entire<br />

territory of RMNP. The Zone has point and lineal character. The total are of the zone<br />

is 117.9 ha, and is formed by the area of the facilities themselves and the territory<br />

around it serving as security areas. The boundaries thereof are determined in<br />

compliance with the applicable technical regulations, instructions and ordinances.<br />

The following sites and facilities make up the Technical Infrastructure Zone (surface<br />

area given in brackets):<br />

1. Kalin Dam (35 ha);<br />

2. Malak (Lesser) Kalin Dam (1.1 ha);<br />

3. Kalin Hydro-Power Station (3 ha); Ribni Lakes Mini Hydro-Power Station<br />

4. Manastirska Water Catchment Area (18.7 ha):<br />

- Left-hand collector – a water tunnel with 5 catchment points (0.5 ha);<br />

- Right-hand collector – a water canal with 3 catchment points and 1,690m total<br />

length (17.2 ha);<br />

- Connecting canal between both collectors, 233m in length (1.0 ha);<br />

5. Iliyna Water Catchment Area (26.5 ha):<br />

- Left-hand collector – a water canal with 15 catchment points and<br />

9,506m total length (11.0 ha);<br />

- Right-hand collector – a water canal with 19 catchment points and<br />

12,664m total length (14.5 ha);<br />

- Connecting canal between both collectors, 124m in length (1.0 ha);<br />

6. Polich Channel –2,425m length with one catchment area;<br />

7. Auxiliary buildings owned by NEC Ltd “Dams and Cascades”in Kalin Dam, Tiha<br />

<strong>Rila</strong>, Elevation 2000 and Turskoto Parche localities (0.4 ha);<br />

8. Security zones around drinking water catchment areas;<br />

9. Electrical power grid:<br />

- The Pastra-Kirilova Polyana power line (20 kV);<br />

- The Brichebor-Kravarski Dol power line (20 kV);<br />

- The Kirilova Polyana-Tiha <strong>Rila</strong> power line (20 kV);<br />

- The Kravarski Dol-Iliyna Tunnel intake power line (20 kV);<br />

- The Kalin HPS-Pastra power line (20 kV).<br />
