<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>The annual statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasurer showed a balance <strong>of</strong> $275.79. J. H. Barton,Carbondale Free Press, reported <strong>the</strong> following resolutions:Resolved, That <strong>the</strong> thanks <strong>of</strong> this Association are due <strong>the</strong> local <strong>press</strong> <strong>of</strong> thiscity for <strong>the</strong> many attentions shown us; to <strong>the</strong> various railroads who have furnishedtransportation in accordance with <strong>the</strong> terms made by and between <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>Association; to <strong>the</strong> citizens generally for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> a hall free <strong>of</strong> cost, for<strong>the</strong> pleasant ride on <strong>the</strong> street railroad, and for <strong>the</strong> most excellent arrangementsfor <strong>the</strong> reception and music on that occasion; to <strong>the</strong> Americus Club for invitationsto attend <strong>the</strong> annual reception and ball.Resolved, That <strong>the</strong> thanks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association are tendered toSenator Shelby M. Cullom for introducing a bill in Congress for <strong>the</strong> repeal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>law which brings <strong>the</strong> government into competition with <strong>the</strong> printing <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> country.In Memoriam addresses were read for Ezra G. Cass, formerly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paw PawTimes, by E. A. Snively; and for Elijah M. Haines, formerly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago LegalAdvisor, by C. A. Partridge.The annual excursion for <strong>the</strong> year, to Mexico City, was <strong>the</strong> most extensive andpr<strong>of</strong>itable one taken by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association. Sixty-three publishers and <strong>the</strong>irwives took <strong>the</strong> trip, leaving Peoria on February 21.A delightful afternoon was spent in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where <strong>the</strong> travelersstopped at <strong>the</strong> new Hotel Eastman, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest and finest hotels in <strong>the</strong> world,having 48 5 guest rooms. The next stop was at San Antonio where <strong>the</strong> party was takenin charge by a group <strong>of</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> men and citizens and shown points <strong>of</strong> interest.A banquet was given at <strong>the</strong> Hotel Hamilton when <strong>the</strong>y reached Laredo, on <strong>the</strong> Mexicanborder.The time was well taken up in Mexico City as <strong>the</strong>re were many interesting thingsto see. President Diaz, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mexican Republic, cordially received <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Association.On <strong>the</strong> fourth day <strong>the</strong> party started <strong>the</strong> return journey stopping for a brief visitto Monterey.A final meeting was held on <strong>the</strong> train near Bismarck, Missouri. Resolutions wereadopted ex<strong>press</strong>ing appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> several railroads that made<strong>the</strong> trip possible, namely: <strong>the</strong> Jacksonville and Sou<strong>the</strong>astern; <strong>the</strong> Wabash; <strong>the</strong> IronMountain Railroad; <strong>the</strong> Hot Springs Railroad; <strong>the</strong> Texas and Pacific; <strong>the</strong> Internationaland Great Nor<strong>the</strong>rn; <strong>the</strong> Mexican National, and <strong>the</strong> Monterey and Mexican Gulf Railroad;also resolutions to President Diaz and o<strong>the</strong>r Mexican <strong>of</strong>ficials, and to <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>s,<strong>of</strong>ficials and citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various cities visited.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> resolutions is quoted in full:Resolved, That <strong>the</strong> papers represented in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association advocatea modification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present commercial treaty between <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong>America and <strong>the</strong> Republic <strong>of</strong> Mexico that will tend to reciprocity and closer traderelations between <strong>the</strong> two countries, which will undoubtedly be <strong>of</strong> mutual advantage.Mr. Selby's paper on "Three Periods <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Journalism," which was given atthis meeting is <strong>of</strong> sufficient importance to be reprinted here in full:92
