<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>The regular program began with a paper from Thomas Rees, Springfield Register,on advertising, followed by discussion. Julius Schneider, Joliet News, read a paper on<strong>the</strong> subject, "Soliciting and Collecting."The subject <strong>of</strong> "Bookkeeping" was presented by C. C. Marquis, Bloomington Pantagraph,who illustrated his subject with a large ledger sample page, a facsimile <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>system he was presenting. M. H. Peters, Watseka Times, followed with a paper on <strong>the</strong>subject <strong>of</strong> "Purchasing." W. H. Henrichsen, Quincy Herald, gave a paper on"Schemes," presenting "pointers" which could be acted upon to advantage by <strong>the</strong> members<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fraternity.Owen Scott, Bloomington Bulletin, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> delegates from <strong>Illinois</strong> to <strong>the</strong>National Editorial Association, which convened at San Antonio, Texas, and made a tourthrough Texas and Mexico during <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> November, was introduced, and told<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> territory and <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbor Republic. The address had <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong>streng<strong>the</strong>ning <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members to make <strong>the</strong> proposed trip. The committee,to which had been referred <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>of</strong> an excursion through Mexico, reported that<strong>the</strong> trip, covering a period <strong>of</strong> twenty days, would cost not over $75 for each member<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> party.The <strong>of</strong>ficers elected for 1889-1890 were: President, Owen Scott, BloomingtonBulletin; Vice Presidents, W. W. Lowis, Lena Star; George W. Harper, Robinson Argus;S. Y. Thornton, Canton Ledger; Secretary, E. B. Fletcher, Morris Herald; Treasurer,George M. Tatham, Greenville Advocate; Executive Committee, Thomas Rees, SpringfieldRegister; J. K. LeBaron, Elgin Every Saturday, and L. A. McLean, Urbana Herald."Exchanges" were <strong>the</strong>n discussed briefly, following which discussion Frank W.Havill, Mt. Carmel Register, spoke on "Editorial Writing."It was resolved that <strong>the</strong> Inland Printer, <strong>of</strong> Chicago, be endorsed as a technicaltrade journal by <strong>the</strong> Association.C. Boeschenstein, Edwardsville Intelligencer, read a paper on "Special Articles,"which was followed by a paper by A. C. Cameron, Inland Printer, Chicago, on <strong>the</strong>"Mechanical Department <strong>of</strong> a Printing Office."A memorial to <strong>the</strong> late Mrs. Cynthia Patrick Bostwick, Mattoon, was read by ElizabethBoynton Harbert <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n Chicago New Era; and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Will R. Carleton<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sumner Press, by George W. Harper, Robinson Argus.
