<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory' and <strong>History</strong>"Premiums—Do They Pay" was <strong>the</strong> next subject; papers were presented by T. H.Stokes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lincoln Times and T. O. Johnston <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oregon Reporter. After aspirited discussion a vote <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members present was taken which resulted in an almostunanimous decision that premiums did not pay.Papers were read by E. D. Conley, Joliet Signal, and John N. Onstott, PetersburgDemocrat, on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> "Cash in Advance—Should It Be Enforced?" Opinionsvaried in <strong>the</strong> discussion on this but <strong>the</strong> majority agreed that it should be enforcedif it could be."Country Correspondence—Is It Worth What It Costs?" was <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> papersread by John N. Onstott, Petersburg Democrat, and Horace Crihfield, Atlanta Argus,and discussed by o<strong>the</strong>r members. Mr. Onstott cited <strong>the</strong> returns on fifteen queries hehad sent to publishers which gave evidence that country correspondence paid.C. E. Loomis, Amboy Journal, read a paper on "Pi." A. H. Lowrie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ElginNews followed with a short talk on <strong>the</strong> advisability <strong>of</strong> making <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Associationauxiliary to <strong>the</strong> National Editorial Association, at <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> which heintroduced Mr. B. B. Herbert <strong>of</strong> Red Wing, Minnesota, ex-president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NationalEditorial Association, who fur<strong>the</strong>r explained <strong>the</strong> aims and objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NationalAssociation.M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws, Urbana Herald, on b.-half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> executive committee, reportedthat <strong>the</strong>re was a lack <strong>of</strong> funds to meet <strong>the</strong> expenses incurred by <strong>the</strong> Association during<strong>the</strong> past year, because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> efforts made to secure an excursion and <strong>the</strong> expense incidentto <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committee on legislation. On motion <strong>of</strong> C. M. Cyrus, PontiacGazette, <strong>the</strong> entire membership <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association was assessed one dollar each. Inaddition, E. A. Snively, Springfield and Carlinville, <strong>of</strong>fered a motion which was carried,to <strong>the</strong> effect that voluntary contributions be made to <strong>the</strong> Association and amountsraised as called for by <strong>the</strong> Treasurer's report.Officers elected were: President, L. A. McLean, Urbana Herald; Vice Presidents,Owen Scott, Bloomington Bulletin; T. O. Johnston, Oregon Reporter; J. M. Page,Jerseyville Democrat; Secretary, E. B. Fletcher, Morris Herald; Treasurer, George M.Tatham, Greenville Advocate; Executive Committee, M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws, Urbana Herald;Thomas Rees, Springfield Register; J. K. LeBaron, Elgin Every Saturday.The president-elect was authorized to appoint a committee <strong>of</strong> three on legislationand on motion <strong>of</strong> M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws, Urbana Herald, <strong>the</strong> Association requested that E. A.Snively, Springfield and Carlinville, be appointed to that committee.Under escort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> citizens' committee <strong>of</strong> Bloomington <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Associationand <strong>the</strong>ir wives made a tour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. A reception by <strong>the</strong> citizens was givenat <strong>the</strong> Windsor Hotel on Wednesday evening.1889The twenty-fourth annual session was held at Danville on February 12, 13 and 14,1889. President L. A. McLean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urbana Herald presided over <strong>the</strong> meeting whichwas held at Lincoln Hall. The Association was welcomed by <strong>the</strong> Mayor, James Sloan,and President McLean responded to his address. He <strong>the</strong>n gave <strong>the</strong> annual president'saddress, stressing <strong>the</strong> high standards and educational value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>Press Association. Suggestions made for <strong>the</strong> business department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association werethat contracting prices for foreign advertising be uniform; that <strong>the</strong> proposed individualmembership fee <strong>of</strong> three dollars in addition to <strong>the</strong> publication admission fee be adopted;and that remonstrance be made against <strong>the</strong> competition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Government in <strong>the</strong>printing and stationery trade.S6
