Illinois Newspaper Directory and Historygains results which she feels are true, but which she must go, crab-like, backward to findany expressible reason for. Her intensity is likely to lead her to mistake the small orbitin which she is circling for the world at large; to deem the little segment she sees thewhole circle. The intensity uncontrolled causes a waste of energizing force, and so alack of that most essential element, the 'staying quality.' It also makes her what theEnglish call 'viewy,' and causes her not only to adhere with what might be termed blindconscientiousness to her convictions, but to insist upon at least presenting these sameconvictions to others. All of which obtain against her as an employe and against strong,far-reaching, well-balanced results as an employer in journalistic work. I am perfectlycertain that when woman controls, directs, and uses to the best advantage the excellentgifts with which she is endowed; when she puts conceit and all small considerationsfrom her, maintaining a high courage in herself and a fine consideration for others, andin working with men goes forward, asking no quarter, with aggressive energy in findingthe work to do, with honest effort to do it well when she has found it, with a vigorouspurpose, which will not change its course or acknowledge defeat, and above all, withundeviating good temper, she will make her way as well as any man—nay, she will makeher way with men. Said a prominent newspaper man to me, in speaking of a little ladywho had worked her way up to a very good position: 'We all like Mrs. . Shenever shirks her work. She never makes us feel that we must stop to be polite to her.She doesn't chatter and she doesn't make a nuisance of herself in any way. She willhold her place against all comers, and will be likely to gain a better one.' Of course,it goes without saying that a woman must be first born to something of a headheritage, and then must master to the last detail the formalities of her work. We hearsomething about forcing recognition. It is not force, but fitness, which is needed to gainfor women recognition and place. In these last days of the nineteenth century the worldis not so very different than it has been all along, and going back among the years wefind that woman has taken exalted place when she has demonstrated her fitness to occupysuch place."Miriam, who poured forth her rapturous song of deliverance of the shore of theRed Sea, which song is the first record we have of the literary effort of a woman, heldsuch sacred place that the rabbinical legend tells us in beautiful, poetic figure that afountain of living water sprang up in her footsteps."Deborah, under her Judean palm, glowing with the fire of faith and spiritualenergy, was by king and people accorded all honor, and Barak, commander of the hosts, begged her to grant him her inspiring companionship, and together they went out againstSisera to victory."The 'violet-crowned' Sappho, in her island home, with its groves of olive and ofpomegranate, swept about by the blue tides of the Aegean sea, had in her time all theworld of learning at her feet, and across the sweep of the centuries from then till nowshe still commands place and homage."Aspasia, of Periclean Athens, was accorded pre-eminent place by the philosophersand literators of the Attic capital, and numbered among her admiring intellectual companionsand friends even the grand old Socrates."Corinna, of Thebes, who wrote in Pindar's time, and who occupied the extraordinarydual relation to him of his rival and his friend, reached universal recognition andeminent place by her ability and industry, Pindar, himself, gracefully and even gratefullyaccepting her criticism when she advised him to moderate the ardor of his fancy, and assured him that he should 'sow with the hand, and not with the whole sack.'"Hypatia, daughter of the learned Theon, of Alexandria, was not, on account ofbeing a woman, denied her father's place as governor of the schools of that center of
