.Joreword. ..he portrayal of those living figures whose activitieswill merit memorials to them is an importantessential in preparing this history of the press ofour state and of the Illinois Press Association. The historian makes record of men and eventsin the past; the living journalist deals with history in themaking. Those editors of history are judged by the impressthey make on their times; just as those of the nowwill be gauged. We are proud of the influence of our journalismancestors and their good works. By the same tokenwe hopefully trust posterity may look upon our labors ashaving been worth while.Illinois has a record that is glorious. To this achievementthe press has contributed in full measure. It has keptstep with every forward activity. Its leaders have been i"the front lines of every epochal struggle.Just recognitionand appraisal of these characters is the object sought bythe compilers. The IllinoisPress Association has been, through itssixty-eight years of continuous organization, and still is,a potent factor in co-ordinating these ivorks. Its endeavoursand those of its members are so interivoven thattheir histories must be written together, and the Pressof Illinois is greatly obligated to our Secretary, H. L.Williamson, for this History. In this light this labor of love is undertaken.John H. Harrison,March 2, 1930The Commercial News, Danville. III.
