The Reverend Doctor E. A. Tanner, President<strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> College, delivered <strong>the</strong> customary address <strong>of</strong> welcome. The President, M. \\ .Ma<strong>the</strong>ws, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urbana Herald, delivered his address on <strong>the</strong> public debt.At this convention <strong>the</strong> following papers were read: "Fourteen Years a CountryJournalist," by T. O. Johnston, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oregon Reporter; "The Moral Power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Secular Press," by C. M. Eames, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jacksonville Journal; "The Country Newspaper,"by J. B. Matlack, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chester Tribune; "What Advertisements Should Be Excluded,"by Charles O. Bradshaw, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kirkwood Leader; <strong>the</strong> annual address on "The Newspaperin Politics," by R. M. Woods, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Joliet Republic and Sun; "The Local Page,"by W. H. Hinrichsen, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jacksonville Courier; "The Art <strong>of</strong> Advertising," by J. K.LeBaron, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Elgin Every Saturday; "Foreign Advertising and Advertising Agents,"written by Thomas Rees, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Springfield Register, and read by E. Clapp, Carrollton Patriot; Treasurer,George M. Tatham, Greenville Advocate; Executive Committee, C. B. Bostwick,Mattoon Gazette; Charles Holt, Kankakee Gazette, and J.W. Clinton, Polo Press.The Association voted approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> President and Secretary inwriting to <strong>the</strong> Minnesota Editors and Publishers Association that it would be impracticablefor <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association to be represented at <strong>the</strong> New Orleans meetingfor organizing a National Association <strong>of</strong> Journalism.The proposed law reducing <strong>the</strong> postage on second-class mail matter was discussed,<strong>the</strong> sentiment <strong>of</strong> those who spoke being unanimously against <strong>the</strong> change.Mr. Owen Scott <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bloomington Bulletin <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>the</strong> following resolution whichwas adopted: In view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulties attendant upon travel at this season <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year,Resolved, That <strong>the</strong> Executive Committee be requested not to call <strong>the</strong> annual meetingbetween January 1 and March 1, 18 86, and in lieu <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> call a special three days'business session to be held during <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> May, 1886. It was also resolved that <strong>the</strong>Association oppose <strong>the</strong> efforts being made to effect a fur<strong>the</strong>r reduction <strong>of</strong> postage upon<strong>newspaper</strong>s.During <strong>the</strong> intermissions between sessions citizens <strong>of</strong> Jacksonville courteously conductedits members in small parties to <strong>the</strong> Central Hospital for <strong>the</strong> Insane, <strong>Illinois</strong>\ tion » ., projected .1.
