<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>paper called <strong>the</strong> Freeman, an organ <strong>of</strong> pronounced Democratic principles. The partnershipwas dissolved in 1832 and Calhoun again set up a plant <strong>of</strong> his own in Watertown andbegan publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watertown Eagle. He found that he had insufficient capital t<strong>of</strong>inance <strong>the</strong> paper and sold it to .\n Alvin Hunt who continued it with success for manyyears. A friend returning from Chicago in 183 3 painted <strong>the</strong> place in such glowingterms that Calhoun decided to make it his home. Accordingly, he put his house in orderand started on <strong>the</strong> long trip, taking with him his printing <strong>press</strong>es and small supply <strong>of</strong>type. His success in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> his adoption led to appointment as county treasurer, latercounty collector; <strong>the</strong> city and county left him little time for private enterprise during<strong>the</strong> first six years after his sale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Democrat. His subsequent activities were dictatedby <strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> his health.
