Illinois Newspaper Directory and Historypaper called the Freeman, an organ of pronounced Democratic principles. The partnershipwas dissolved in 1832 and Calhoun again set up a plant of his own in Watertown andbegan publication of the Watertown Eagle. He found that he had insufficient capital tofinance the paper and sold it to .\n Alvin Hunt who continued it with success for manyyears. A friend returning from Chicago in 183 3 painted the place in such glowingterms that Calhoun decided to make it his home. Accordingly, he put his house in orderand started on the long trip, taking with him his printing presses and small supply oftype. His success in the city of his adoption led to appointment as county treasurer, latercounty collector; the city and county left him little time for private enterprise duringthe first six years after his sale of the Democrat. His subsequent activities were dictatedby the condition of his health.
