<strong>Illinois</strong> Nevcspaim u Diiu< iory and <strong>History</strong>John Withnal BaileyJohn Withnal Bailey was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, October U,1830, and died at Princeton, <strong>Illinois</strong>, May 22, 1903. He was elected to<strong>the</strong> Hall October 4, 1929—Election 10. After a few years in <strong>the</strong> commonschools <strong>of</strong> Cincinnati John entered upon an apprenticeship in a job<strong>of</strong>fice at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> thirteen. He became interested in writing shortstories and sketches and obtained employment as a reporter on variousdailies including that <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r. After experience with a Republicanpaper in Connersville, Indiana, <strong>the</strong> Tiffin, Ohio, Tribune, <strong>the</strong> ToledoDaily Commercial, and <strong>the</strong> Cincinnati Enquirer, Bailey spent a winterin Washington as a political correspondent. His decision to move westcame after a severe illness in 1862. He purchased <strong>the</strong> Bureau CountvRepublican and began to build it into a great <strong>newspaper</strong>. In a shorttime he was forced to enlarge it though he did not make a practice <strong>of</strong>selling ei<strong>the</strong>r advertising or subscriptions. He worked on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>orythat <strong>the</strong> paper should be made worth while editorially and <strong>the</strong> businessside would, to some extent, take care <strong>of</strong> itself. His efforts were rewardedby <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest circulation in <strong>the</strong> countryweekly field. He was a charter member and one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first presidents<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association.
