<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>John Waterbury ClintonJohn Waterbury Clinton was born at Andes, New York, November21, 18 36, and died at Polo, <strong>Illinois</strong>, February 11, 1918. He was electedto <strong>the</strong> Hall October 3, 1929—Election 9. He was educated in Andesand Roxbury academies in New York and after completing his studieshe taught school for a time in that vicinity. He came west in 18 57 andwas engaged to teach school near Polo. He taught in <strong>the</strong> neighborhood<strong>of</strong> Polo for seven years and <strong>the</strong>n bought and began publishing <strong>the</strong> PoloPress, later called Ogle County Press, <strong>the</strong> Tri-County Press <strong>of</strong> today.He published this paper until 1901 when he sold <strong>the</strong> property and retired.He held a number <strong>of</strong> public <strong>of</strong>fices in Polo and devoted much <strong>of</strong>his time to <strong>the</strong> welfare <strong>of</strong> his section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. He was widely knownas an historian and when he retired in 1901 he devoted himself to collection<strong>of</strong> historical data. He was president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Associationin 1884 and at that time forecast <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalschools <strong>of</strong> journalism.656
