liiiNois Newspaper Directory and HistoryMi iville Elijah StoneMelville Elijah Stone was born at Hudson, Illinois, August 22,1848, and died in New York, February 1 5, 1929. He was elected to theHall October 3, 1929—Election 8. Due to the itinerant life of hisfather, a preacher on an Illinois circuit, Stone's early education wasirregular. It was acquired in the public schools of Nauvoo, Chicago,Kaneville. and Naperville. At 16 Stone became a reporter on The ChicagoTribune. In 1871 he was made managing editor of The ChicagoRepublican and a year later effected a consolidation between the Postand the Mail. In 1875 he started The Chicago Daily News and in 1881The Morning News. In 1892 he accepted the post of general managerof the Associated Press of Illinois and when The Associated Press wasreorganized in 1900 he was chosen as general manager and served in thatcapacity until 1921. From 1921 until his death he held the post ofcounsellor. After his death he was voted the title of a founder of TheAssociated Press. Honorary degrees were bestowed upon Mr. Stone byYale, Wesleyan, Columbia, Middleburv and Knox. Among nearly ascore of foreign decorations given to Mr. Stone by foreign governmentsare those of Japan, France, Italy, Belgium, Siam, Sweden, Russia, Germanyand Poland.655
