<strong>Illinois</strong> Niwm'Umk Directory and <strong>History</strong>Henry Means PindellHenry Means Pindell was born at St. Joseph, Missouri, December23, 1860, and died at Northport Point, Michigan, August 8, 1924. Hewas elected to <strong>the</strong> Hall October 4, 1929—Election 12. He was graduatedfrom De Pauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, in 18 84, andwent to work as a reporter. He became in turn editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wabash,Indiana, Times, reporter on The Chicago Tribune, and city editor <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> State Register, Springfield, <strong>Illinois</strong>. In 18 89 Pindell movedto Peoria and founded The Peoria Herald. Later he purchased ThePeoria Transcript and Peoria Times. A succession <strong>of</strong> purchases,mergers, and consolidations left him at <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> two importantpapers in Peoria, <strong>the</strong> Transcript, in <strong>the</strong> morning field, and <strong>the</strong> Journal,in <strong>the</strong> evening field. Under his direction <strong>the</strong> papers became notable for<strong>the</strong>ir excellence and <strong>the</strong>ir public service. He held a number <strong>of</strong> positions<strong>of</strong> trust and declined appointment by W'oodrow Wilson as ambassadorto Russia.
