Tinney—Born in Marion, Indiana, November 11, 18 SO.He came to Pekin, <strong>Illinois</strong>, with his parents when nine years old. He attendedpublic schools and later studied law and was admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar and started practicingat Virginia, <strong>Illinois</strong>, in 1874. He purchased <strong>the</strong> Virginia Gazette in 18 80 and continuedas editor and publisher for 2 5 years. Joined <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association when <strong>the</strong>late Hon. E. A. Snively was president and Joe Page, secretary. He was twice electedpresident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I. P. A. and was a delegate to <strong>the</strong> National Editorial Association threedifferent times, hie was active in State political affairs. Served as postmaster <strong>of</strong> Virginiafrom 1898 to 1902. Married Miss Anna E. Craft <strong>of</strong> Virginia in November, 1886.Now living in Springfield, <strong>Illinois</strong>.Charles Boeschenstun—Born at Highland, <strong>Illinois</strong>, October 27, 1864.He attended school at Highland and at Washington University, Saint Louis,Missouri. At <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifteen he owned a printing <strong>press</strong> on which he did many smalljobs. On August 20, 1881, he bought <strong>the</strong> Highland Herald and in January, 1883, heacquired <strong>the</strong> Edwardsville Intelligencer and merged <strong>the</strong> Herald with <strong>the</strong> Intelligencer.Under his ownership he made this old paper one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most influential in sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong>.In 1907 he began publishing <strong>the</strong> Intelligencer as a daily. He installed <strong>the</strong> first linotypemachine in Madison County at <strong>the</strong> Intelligencer <strong>of</strong>fice. He remained <strong>the</strong> active head<strong>of</strong> Intelligencer until 1917 when he became president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Edwardsville National Bankand Trust Company. He is active in state political affairs. Served as mayor <strong>of</strong> Edwardsvillein 1887-89. In 1912 he became Democratic National Committeeman from <strong>Illinois</strong>and served in that capacity until 1924. Married Miss Bertha Whitbread <strong>of</strong> Edwardsville,November 10, 1892. Three children.M. F. Walsh—Born Jan. 17, 1867, on a farm near Harvard, <strong>Illinois</strong>.Entered <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> business as an apprentice printer in 18 84 at one dollar perweek. Became editor and owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Harvard Herald in <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 18 87 and hasmaintained that position continuously since that time. Postmaster 16 years. Civil servicecommissioner five years. Served as Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Registration and Educationin <strong>the</strong> cabinet <strong>of</strong> Gov. Louis L. Emmerson. Married Mary Groesbeck, 1900. Nochildren.Arthur C. Bentley—Born near Griggsville, Jan. 12, 1860. Died May 9, 1906.Taught school and read law as a young man. Admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar in 18 82. WithD. E. Donley, established <strong>the</strong> Baylis Guide, 1890. In 1895, with C. W. Caughlan, purchased<strong>the</strong> Pittsfield Pike County Banner, changing <strong>the</strong> name to <strong>the</strong> Pike Countv Times,by which name it is still known. Master in Chancery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pike County circuit court1893-1905; secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Democratic committee, 1897-9S. Married Laura Grime,1901, who with her two sons, survives him.623
