<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>"There was much excitement in 1852-33, occasioned by <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deposits,banking question, etc., which brought into existence a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong>s. I canonly speak <strong>of</strong> a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m in this paper."The Alton Spectator was founded by O. M. Adams and Edward Breath.The firstissue was made January 21, 1832. It was <strong>the</strong> first paper published in Alton. Politically,it advocated <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whig party."The Alton Telegraph, for main years <strong>the</strong> ablest <strong>newspaper</strong> published in <strong>Illinois</strong>,not in <strong>the</strong> west, was founded by Richard M. Treadwav and Lawson M. Parks, Januaryif15, 1836. It came into existence during <strong>the</strong> political excitement upon <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> petition, so ably championed by John Quincy Adams. The Telegraph was<strong>the</strong> western <strong>newspaper</strong> that stood by Mr. Adams in that contest. It would please me tospeak extendedly <strong>of</strong> John Bailhace and George T. M. Davis, its able editors, but timeforbids."Emigration was gradually pushing northward to <strong>the</strong> central and western parts<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. Some few settlements were made on <strong>the</strong> east side, and wherever any considerablenumber <strong>of</strong> people had located <strong>the</strong>re soon was published a <strong>newspaper</strong> to speakfor <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>ir locality. Chicago on <strong>the</strong> north was looming up and needed a <strong>newspaper</strong>to speak <strong>of</strong> its future greatness. In obedience to that demand <strong>the</strong> ChicagoDemocrat was established, and <strong>the</strong> first pacer printed in that city was dated November26, 1833. John Calhoun was its founder. He continued <strong>the</strong> publication until in November,1836, when it passed into <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> John Wentworth and was edited andpublished by him until July 27, 1861, when it was merged with <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune.Mr. Wentworth made <strong>the</strong> Democrat <strong>the</strong> leading Jackson paper in <strong>the</strong> west, and perhapsin its day it was <strong>the</strong> most potential journal in <strong>the</strong> state."The American was <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a paper published in Chicago in 1835. It wasfounded by Thomas O. Davis. It has had a continuous existence and is now <strong>the</strong> wellknownChicago Journal."The Advertiser founded by Hooper Warren in 1S36 at Chicago, has already beenmentioned."I shall conclude this paper by giving <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> a few o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>newspaper</strong>s foundedprior to 1S3 5, and will here state that <strong>the</strong> dates and names <strong>of</strong> publishers are taken fromold copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers, which I have in my possession. <strong>Illinois</strong> Patriot, founded byJames G. Edwards at Jacksonville, November 19, 1831. Hennepin Journal, foundedSeptember 15, 1827. <strong>Illinois</strong> State Gazette and Jacksonville News, founded by Messrs.Brooks & Pettit. January 2 8, 183 5. <strong>Illinois</strong> Champion and Peoria Republic, establishedOctober 21, 1S35; subsequently changed to <strong>the</strong> Peoria Register. In 1843 it was editedbv W. H. and S. G. Butler. Beardstown Chronicle and <strong>Illinois</strong> Military Bounty LandAdvertizer, established July 2 9. 183 5, by F. Arenz at Beardstown. Danville Enquirer,founded October 1, 1835, by Messrs. Williams & Bryant, at Danville. <strong>Illinois</strong>. QuincyArgus, established in August, 1855; published and owned by Kurns & Bassett. andedited by I. N. Morris and J. J. Bradley. Quincy Whig, founded May 24. 1S58, byBartlett & Sullivan. <strong>Illinois</strong> Statesman, founded by John Delay at Paris. <strong>Illinois</strong>, inFebruary, 1S5S. The Bloomington Observer, founded in <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> 1837 bv J. W.Fell. Rushville Journal and Military Tract Advertizer. Volume I. No. 1. April 24. 1S55;C. W. Thefourth <strong>press</strong> destroyed by a mob, and Lovejoy killed, November 7, 1857."57
