Situated in Hamilton County, 45 miles sou<strong>the</strong>ast<strong>of</strong> Centralia. L. & N. R.R. Flour, woolen and saw mills. Timber. Agriculture.The immediate forerunner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Times was <strong>the</strong> HamiltonDemocrat, published by T. B. Stelle. R. L. Brown, at <strong>the</strong> time hepurchased <strong>the</strong> paper changed <strong>the</strong> name to <strong>the</strong> McLeansboro Times.In 1872 George K. and John C. Edwards bought <strong>the</strong> paper, runningit in <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> Horace Greeley for <strong>the</strong> presidency. M. B. Friendbought <strong>the</strong> Times in 1873 and continued publication until <strong>the</strong>spring <strong>of</strong> 1874 when <strong>the</strong> entire building was destroyed by fire.During <strong>the</strong> following summer, Mr. Friend, aided by donations,purchased <strong>the</strong> material <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mount Vernon Statesman, and inJuly, 1874, again bought out <strong>the</strong> Times which has been publishedunder its present name since that date. James R. and Charles Campbellsecured <strong>the</strong> paper in 1878 and in 1883 Charles Campbell sold hisW C Fairwf.a<strong>the</strong>r interest to James Campbell, who published it for <strong>the</strong> next twentytwoyears. M. E. Daniel bought <strong>the</strong> Times in 1898 continuing aspublisher until 1923 when he sold out to W. C. Fairwea<strong>the</strong>r. The Leader was owned byLyon & Erwin, Dr. C. M. Lyon later having <strong>the</strong> sole control until it was purchased byDr. C. H. Anderson in 1910.
