Its real foundations were built by Joseph Medill who joinedit in 185 5. Owner, The Tribune Company, incorporated in 1861 by a special act <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Illinois</strong> legislature. Editor and Publisher, Colonel Robert R. McCormick, grandson <strong>of</strong>Joseph Medill. Managing editor, Edward S. Beck. Business manager, W. E. Macfarlane.The Tribune, oldest Chicago <strong>newspaper</strong>, has been in control <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> same family for 79 years. Since 1861 its growth has been unaidedby absorption <strong>of</strong>, or merger with any o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>newspaper</strong>. The ChicagoTribune has lived through four major American wars, eight majorde<strong>press</strong>ions. Twice, in 1849 and 1871, its plants have been destroyedby fire. Six months after <strong>the</strong> fire <strong>of</strong> 1849 <strong>the</strong> Tribune became <strong>the</strong>first <strong>newspaper</strong> in <strong>the</strong> west to install telegraphic news service. In1865 it initiated <strong>the</strong> activities which led to <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Western Associated Press, forerunner <strong>of</strong> today's "A. P." The Tribune'sgreatest era began in 1912, <strong>the</strong> year in which its presidency wasassumed by Colonel McCormick. In <strong>the</strong> succeeding years, circulationincreased at a tremendous pace. Today it is <strong>the</strong> most influential <strong>newspaper</strong>in America. Among o<strong>the</strong>r achievements this era is marked by<strong>the</strong> Tribune s acquisition <strong>of</strong> its own paper mill, timberlands andR. R. Mt CORMICK ,_..,, ... £fleet <strong>of</strong> ships; by <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> its European edition and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New York DailyNews; by its invention <strong>of</strong> coloroto printing and by its development <strong>of</strong> run-<strong>of</strong>-paper colorprinting. Independent Republican in politics, <strong>the</strong> Tribune has been fearless in its attackson <strong>of</strong>ficial corruption, regardless <strong>of</strong> party. It has established a notable record in serving itscommunity and <strong>the</strong> nation by its exposures <strong>of</strong> graft and crime. Its contributions to publicserviceare numerous. It was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>newspaper</strong> to publish a daily column on health, adviceto investors, and on o<strong>the</strong>r topics <strong>of</strong> public interest, each <strong>of</strong> which features originated as<strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a vigorous campaign by <strong>the</strong> Tribune to correct a widespread evil.
