Illinois Newspaper Directory and HistoryCHICAGO DAILY NEWS: Established 1876 by Melville E. Stone and associates.Purchased same year by Victor F. Lawson, who remained owner and publisher until 1925.Frank Knox, publisher since September, 1931. Frank Knox, editor. Charles H. Dennis,editor emeritus.Chicago, population, 3,376,43 8. Situated in Cook County at the southern end ofLake Michigan, at the mouth of the Chicago River. Termination point of 3 8 railroads.Second largest city in the United States.The Daily News was first issued "on trial" Dec. 23, 1875, and began regular publicationJan. 2, 1876. The founders were Melville E. Stone, later general manager ofthe Associated Press; Percy R. Meggy, and William E. Dougherty.They believed the time ripe for the publication of a "penny daily,"giving all the news in condensed form. The first issue was fourpages, five columns to the page, pages, 16 inches long. But competitionwas too keen and the burden too heavy, so Mr. Stone sold thesubscription list, the type, the good will, and all other possessionsto Victor Freemont Lawson in July, 1876. Stone continued as editorand Lawson acted as business manager. Be;ause of the scarcity of1-cent pieces, it was necessary to import pennies in 100,000 lotsfrom Philadelphia to meet the demand. Under the new arrangementthe paper "found itself." Its circulation increased to 7,000 or8,000 copies a day, and when the great railroad strike of 1877 oc- _ ..r °,,Col. Frank v.K. Knoxcurred, it catapulted at times to 90,000 copies a day. On March 21,1881, the Chicago Morning News was started as an adjunct to the Daily News. On May9, 1892, the morning edition name was changed to the Chicago News Record; on March13, 1893 to The Chicago Record; and was consolidated with the Times-Herald on March28, 1901 and became the Record-Herald. After Mr. Stone sold his entire interest toMr. Lawson in 1876, he later acquired a one-third interest, which heagain sold to Mr. Lawson in 18 88. Mr. Lawson continued as soleowner and publisher until his death Aug. 19, 1925. The Daily Newsproperty was bought in 192 5 by Walter Ansell Strong, former businessmanager of the Daily News, the announcement of the purchasebeing made on Dec. 24. He became the publisher, and CharlesDennis, who had been managing editor, became the editor. A new2 5 -story building was erected at 400 West Madison Street, and onJune 8, 1929 the Daily News moved to it from its old site at 15North Wells Street, where it had been since its founding. WalterA. Strong continued as publisher until his sudden death May 10,1931. Several months later a controlling interest in the Daily Newswas purchased by Col. Frank Knox, publisher of the Manchester(N.J.) Union and Leader, and Theodore T. Ellis, (died January 6, 1934) of Worcester,Mass. Col. Knox became president of the Chicago Daily News Company, and publisher,and Mr. Ellis became vice president. Mr. Dennis continued as editor. The Daily Newsestablished the first independent foreign news service, which has been copied the worldover. It also established and maintains The Daily News Fresh-Air Fund in Lincoln Park.Circulation, 406,176.Advertising rate: local, 5 5c per line; national, 70c per line.Subscription rate: local, $10.80; foreign, $7.50.5 64

Largest city in DuPage County, 16 miles west of( hicago. C. & N. W.; I. C; C. A. & E.; C. G. W. R.R.'s. Largest shopping center incounty of 100,000. Community of homes and small estates. Seatof Elmhurst College.The Elmhurst Press is issued Friday, and is Independent Republicanin politics. The corporation is made up of Harold J. Cruger,Mrs. Ida L. Cruger, and Mrs. Ruth Cruger Williams. The combinedcirculation of this and other papers they publish is in excess of12,U0U copies weekly, and attractive combination advertising rates arein effect. Other papers issued include Thrifty Shopper, Villa Parker,Lombard Press and Villa Park News. Publications covering intensivelyall of northeast DuPage County, with population of 3 5,000.The paper has been owned by the Crugers for more than 12 years.Circulation, 6,150, including free circulation, Thrifty Shopper.HaroluIAdvertising rate: local, 75c; foreign, 98c; combination five papers, rate $2.00.Subscription rate: local, S2.00.LOCKPORT HERALD: Established 1933 by Hubert Nelson. Interest sold toJoseph Donnelly, Jr., in February, 1934. Co-partnership entered into by Mr. Donnelly andJames R. Schmitz in April, 1934. James R. Schmitz, editor.Lockport, population, 3378, center Lockport township. Situated in Will County,5 miles north of Joliet on the DesPlaines River and Lakes-to-Gulf Canal. Terminal ofdeep waterway from Lake Michigan, A. T. & S. F.; E. J. & E.; Alton R.R.'s. Threetrunk lines. Coke plant, gas plant, oil refinery, roofing companies, cereal mills, brassfoundry, lock factory, and boiler works. Gravel and stone deposits. Coal, lumber. Dairyand grain farming. Shopping center.The Herald is Independent in political affiliation and is issued every 1 ridaj .Circulation, free distribution.Advertising rate: local, 50c per inch; foreign, 75c per inch.NAUJIENOS: Established by the Lithuanian News Publishing Company in 1914.Pius Grigaitis, editor; T. Rypkevich, business manager. Present owner, the LithuanianNews Publishing Company, 1739 S. Halsted Street, Chicago.The Naujienos is published daily except Sundays and has no political affiliations.Circulation, 37,5 86.Advertising rate: local, classified, 9()c per inch; display, 10c per line.Subscription rate: local, $8.00; foreign, $8.00.NATIONAL STOCK YARDS LIVE STOCK REPORTER: Established 1890.Reporter Publishing Company, publisher; C. H. Hitchborn, editor.National Stock Yards, population, 1209. Located in St. Clair County, adjoiningEast St. Louis. Served by eleven railroads.
