<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>-FARMER CITY JOURNAL: Established 1872 by John S. Harper. Edward L.Wilson, editor.Farmer City, population, 1611. Located in DeWitt County, 2 5 miles sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>of</strong>Bloomington. C. C. C. & St. L.; I. C. R.R.'s. Ships grain and live stock. Agriculture,dairying.The Journal is <strong>the</strong> sole survivor <strong>of</strong> eight papers which have been started in FarmerCity at various times. Two years after its founding, <strong>the</strong> Journal was purchased byD. J. Smith and J. R. Robinson, who before issuing any numbers sold out to W. L.Glessner, whose bro<strong>the</strong>r, L. C. Glessner took a half interest in <strong>the</strong> paper and assumed fullcharge, buying <strong>the</strong> entire paper in 1877. In 1879 <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice was moved to Carlinvillewhere <strong>the</strong> paper was issued as <strong>the</strong> Herald. The Journal was continued after 1879 byW. C. Devore, who sold to M. V. Zimmerman in 18 87. Zimmerman sold to E. A. andC. L. Wood in 1891, and in 1895 <strong>the</strong> paper passed to F. S. Nutt and B. B. Bates. WhenMr. Nutt died in 18 96, he was succeeded by his bro<strong>the</strong>r, S. E. Nutt, who sold to E. A.Williams <strong>the</strong> following year. For 27 years Williams and Bates continued to publish <strong>the</strong>paper, until Bates finally obtained full control and remained as publisher until 1920,when Lewis Erler purchased a half interest. Mr. Bates later purchased Erler's interestand continued to operate <strong>the</strong> plant until February, 192 J, when he sold to <strong>the</strong> Home NewsPublishing Company <strong>of</strong> Chicago. Since <strong>the</strong>n, G. C. Terry, Carlos W. Cleary, and E. S.Wightman have served as editors and managers until Mr. Wilson took control in 1934.The Journal is published every Thursday, and is Independent in politics.Circulation, 1100.Advertising rate: local, 27c; foreign, 3 5c.Subscription rate: local, $1.00; foreign, $2.00.fMANSFIELD EXPRESS: Established 1881 by J. Kilby <strong>of</strong> Washington, <strong>Illinois</strong>, previous to December, 1932 when it waspurchased by Frank Conrady, who sold it to <strong>the</strong> present owner in 1933.This is a weekly publication, issued every Thursday.
